hello, i need some help. I am trying to network together to pc's running xp-home edition. I am able to see each other but on the second pc i can not access the first pc. (files and folders)It says path not found, contact your Administrator", but I am able to surf the net on the second pc. (First pc has internet acces.)
I read in one of the articles posted here that after removing and rebooting the first pc's ethernet card you would gain acces to files and folders, this method works but the problem is that after doing this the second pc looses the internet connection, but I am able to acces files and folders on the first pc. The first pc shows the network icon as having Limited or no Connectivity after I do this. Can anybody suggest any help please.
Both pc have a Name and are on the same Workgroup.

Hi eliyzfr600

had you allowed shared folders on both PCs ?

Right click on C:\ "properties/sharing".

Hope it will help.

thanks for the reply Ironbender, I have now made C: drive shared on both pc's and I am able to access both pc's files and folders but still pc1 (the one with internet access) shows a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on the networking icons. And pc2 is not able to access the internet. Any other suggestions. I tried rebooting after changes but still no access

Ok, probably some protocol conflict...

On both systems, have you installed TCP/IP ? Select it and click properties.

Attrib a different IP address to both machines, like for example, 192.168.0.1 to which is connected to the net, and 192.168.0.2 to the other. Set subnet mask on both to 255.255.255.0
Set gateway to 192.168.0.1

Reboot both computers and see if you can browse the net on both.

Chris

Note: you must install Microsoft Network clients and Files and printers sharing on both machines, if they are not installed yet.

thanks for all the help Ironbender, i finally found the source of the problem. My second pc did not have any service packs or security packs, after updating all this and running the Network setup again (on both pc's)I was able to access the internet and My Network Places. The second pc on my network, however was still not able to access ( but was able to see it)pc1, but pc1 was able to see and access pc2. The problem with this was my personal firewall (McAfee). All I had to do was go under my Options and allow connection from pc2.

Again thanks for the help. smiley- yes.gif
