(I have Win98se, OE 6.0, IE 6.0, Dell Dimension XPS T450MHz Pentium III)

Hello, in your understanding and experience, which of the two (below) is more efficient in security and easier to contact for support?

(1) Norton SystemWorks2005 (I have the 2000) which includes a year's subscription to LiveUpdate2005 anti-virus (I have the 2003), for $39.95 as an upgrade? OR:

(2) Grisoft (AVG) latest version which also includes an anti-virus program, for about the same price as Norton?

(3) Additionally, I read somewhere that Avast (http://www.avast.com/) and Trend Micro's PC-cillin (http://www.trendmicro.com/) are the best. Has anyone experienced any of these?

I anticipate my thanks for any help you can give. Adela

Norton System Works is a System Resource Hog. I would NOT install that on any system, especially a P3.

AVG has poor detection. It does not do well in any testing I have seen. I do not know why people swear by it. Don't listen to them.

PcCillin is rated pretty good. Kaspersky AV is rated even better in tests I have seen.

Avast free is pretty good.

Check Interceptors AV test 2005 HERE.

You also need a firewall. Check Zone Alarm free below in my signature.

I have been using PC Cillin for years, and I honestly cannot remember one virus getting past it. Plus it does not slow down your system. Now PC Cillin Inernet Security comes with a first rate firewall. Newegg has it on sale for download Here. It will cost you $35 to download, then burn the download file to a CD and you have a CD copy. If you have a previous version of Norton or McAfree antivirus programs, you can get a rebate of $25, which brings your cost down to $10! Read the rebate form carefull before buying, just click on the "$25.00 Mail-In Rebate" link.'

Hello efaves, and thank you very much for your opinion, though I'm a little disappointed that AVG is not as good as many think. I had made up my mind to take it, but in view of the very useful Interceptors reviews you sent me, I'll probably try one of the better ones it and you suggest.

I'd like to try Avar...but the review says it's difficult to configure, and without tech support I may not be able to do it, but I'll try. I can't afford the high price of PC Cillin, but I'm sure I'll find something pretty good when I read again the reviews.

As to a firewall, one techi I had made me buy, among other things, an $80 Linksys router/firewall...which I'm not even using because it interfered with my computer connections. Brand new, can you imagine? Do you think I should get the Zone Alarm and forget about the Linksys?

Thanks again! Adela

Hello ranchhand, and thank you for your good advice! It looks like PC Cillin is one of the better ones, if not the best, and the one you so kindly pointed out to me with a $25 rebate seems to be...well more than a bargain! I wonder though what's the difference between "OEM", "Retail" and "in the box"???

I'm going to keep this useful information, but for now I'll get the free AVG despite some not so good reviews so that I have something to catch the viruses (my Norton LiveUpdate has expired) so I have a chance to go over this and other antivirus programs.

I read some of the enduser reviews and some of them said it takes up too much space...this would be an issue since Norton takes up a lot of space and I suspect this to be the reason for my puter being sluggish for sometime now.

Again, thanks so very much for enlightening me! Adela

P.S. Unfortunately I don't have a CD burner...so would have to rely on their online resources?
