Hello! I am trying to copy a 1.1 GB programme to a disc. The disc has only 700 MB of space, how do I compress the file size to get the programme on the disc. I think I need the programme on one disc because I have to install all files together. Or is their another way to do this?

Thanks,

kind of depends on the files in question:

Most types of computer files are fairly redundant "meaning" they have the same information listed over and over again. File-compression programs simply get rid of the redundancy. Instead of listing a piece of information over and over again, a file-compression program lists that information once and then refers back to it whenever it appears in the original program.

try winzip or winrar and see how it handles them.

Hi Moon! I have tried both programmes you suggested, and no luck! I was hoping my nero burning software would help me split the file.

Thanks for your reply to my question.

Hi Steve, and welcome to SAF

If you compressed all the files in a .zip file, it may be shrinked enough to fit in your CD... zip utility may compress them more or less depending on settings. What was the .zip file size after compression ?

Note that some files, such as images, can not be compressed or very few.

Chris

HJSplit is a popular set of freeware file-splitting programs created by Freebyte! in collaboration with various programmers. HJSplit supports many platforms (Windows 3.x/95/98/ME/2000/NT/XP, DOS, Amiga, Java, etc.). All versions are compatible with each other and allow you to exchange files between these different platforms. E.g. a file split on the Amiga can be joined on Windows 2000 and vice versa.

There is also an option in WinRAR to split the output files to smaller sizes. Then these files can be copied onto any media that will hold the smaller files even if it requires two or three or more discs. Just copy all the files from the discs onto the drive then unpack them with WinRAR. It's also possible to make the files self-extracting.

jimholly is correct about useing winrar to split it up into volumes with sizes settable to cd size (650MG or 700MG)

Here it will be able to do what you need it to and it's free and clean form spyware etc.
