"Dear Microsoft .NET Passport Member:

Thank you for using Microsoft® .NET Passport. Because Microsoft recognizes the importance of security and reliability when using Internet software, we have now made available free browser security upgrades to better protect your online information. We strongly recommend that you check now to see whether your browser needs one of these security upgrades by going to: http://securitycheck.passport.com/default.asp .

IF CLICKING A LINK DOESN'T WORK...

Copy it, and then paste it into your browser's address bar.
Select the entire link (which starts with http:// and may include more than one line) and then copy it, usually by clicking the "Edit" menu item and then clicking "Copy". Next, open your browser and click in the box where you usually see the Web page address. Paste the link into this box (usually by clicking "Paste" in the "Edit" menu) and click "Go" or "Enter".

.NET Passport is committed to protecting your privacy. We encourage you to review our privacy statement at: http://www.passport.com/privacypolicy.asp .

I clicked on the first link above and was taken to a screen that informed me that I had the patch already and no further action was needed. Pete

Keeping your personal information secure is our top priority.
We have identified your Microsoft® Internet Explorer browser as older than version 5.5. A security patch that helps protect your online information is now available for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0. Microsoft® MSN Explorer users should also install the security patch. To help keep your online information secure, please upgrade your browser now, and then install the latest security patch.
Note: If you are using a public or shared computer, you may not have permission to update this browser.

What do you want to do?

Upgrade to Internet Explorer version 6.0 (Recommended)
Please return to this page after upgrading and install the security patch by clicking the link in the message you received.
Tell me more about the security patch.

Do not upgrade now.
I will upgrade later from Windows Update.

First, I do not use any passport programs.  I never have or will trust computers to keep my personal stuff safe.
Secondly, I have avoided upgrading because I have several hundred sites in my restricted zone now, and I am afraid that if I upgrade, I will lose all this, and have to re-enter it.
Does any one know if I upgrade, that the sites I have placed in restricted will remain in restricted?

Couldn't you just copy your restricted sites list to a text file? That way, even if it did get wiped out, all you'd have to do would be copy it straight back in, right?

For what it's worth, I use IESpyAD for my restricted sites list, and I just checked it and it doesn't seem to have been affected by any of the patches or updates I've done lately (IE5.5 w/SP2;Q306121;Q312461;Q313675). Pete

Ha! I thought about doing just that, but don't know if it can be done. I originally entered them all manually. I place any site that dumps on me without prompting, or if I have to hit "NO" to cookies or active X too many times, in restricted and would hate to have to start all over again.

Guess you can't copy and paste (mine wouldn't, anyway). SURELY someone who actually KNOWS something about computers will come along and tell you how to do it! <g>

Either that or post a question about how to do it in the applicable windows forum. Pete

Good gawd they made this hard to find!  :angree:  Just look at how they did this and you'll see what I mean.
Most likely it'll keep your settings. It always does for me. But, I did find where it stores the zones information, intranet,  trusted, and restricted.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains
Right-click on that in regedit and export it to text. If you lose that list of sites somehow, merge that back in.

Thanks, Mike! Good info! Pete

Yes they did Mike!
I have been all over my PC lately. Thats how I found those prodigy files with "amusing" (not) descriptions.
Anyway, thanks a lot, I never did find it in the registry, and finally did the upgrade to EI 6 (crossed fingers) anyway. It did keep my settings.
but I have less than a gig of HD space left, on my IBM 380 PC, and need to upgrade very soon. I have been organizing files for the move so I won't have to do too much 'tweaking' when that happens. So I really did need MY list (that I add to almost daily) even if it saved my settings.

Wheeeeew! You saved me a lot of work!
-Thanks.

I exported it both as a .txt and as .reg file. Now that I know where it is, I can make regular back ups as I need them.
