I've never used one of these but they don't look much different from any external USB hard drive.
How are you trying to use it with DOS? You indicate that you want to use it with Ghost - have you tried making boot disks with the appropriate version of USB support? I haven't had any problems using most external USB boxes with the Norton Ghost supplied USB drivers - there are a few that won't work with those drivers, but for the most part anything that's built specifically as a backup device normally comes with drivers for most operating systems, including DOS - have you checked the driver & software CD for this device to see what's available?

That's for the firewire interface - that unit is supposed to have the capability to connect via multiple interface protocols such as USB, Firewire, PCMCIA, Parallel, etc. so I'd certainly be inclined to try various USB drivers for DOS. When you're looking for the drivers, ensure you use the one(s) that support the computer side - if your computer is USB 1.1 and you're trying to use USB 2.0 drivers, it won't work.
If you're using the Norton Ghost boot disks with USB support (not peer-to-peer), make one with USB 1.1 and another with 2.0 and see what connects. If your device is "highly proprietary" and Amacom don't support USB drivers for DOS (and if available DOS drivers don't work), then you're out of luck and must use the device as prescribed by the manufacturer - I'm always skeptical of these devices that are advertised as being the "next best thing to sliced bread"..
