Full Version: Strange issue with wireless network

I don't think it's a problem with either of the wireless networks themselves, as I've had the same problem with both, but either a problem with Windows XP, or with something interfering with the signal.

Essentially, I'm having problems with my signal integrity. I'll have a good signal, or even a very good signal from my location, not move my computer even a centimeter, and the next second have a low/poor signal. Also, occassionally, my computer just stops sending or receiving data, for no apparent reason, disconnecting me entirely from the internet, and this happens with every internet-based program on my computer, so it isn't just Internet Explorer.

Any help in identifying the issue would be appreciated.
I'm running a pentium 266 on a laptop, but I'm having the same problem with a desktop computer located closer to the network hub, with more memory and a better CPU.

You will need to describe the location of the router and computer. The configuration of the environment has a lot to do with changes in reception, so things like walls or different types will affect reception, as will being in proximity to Electo-Magnetic Interference.

Move the router to a "clear" area where the router & computer will be away from electrical noise and the walls/ceilings/floors will be invisible to that frequency (concrete & reinforced concrete can make reception spotty or block it completely).

If you only have two computers on the network running from a router, why are you using a hub?

Have you changed the channel in your wireless setup? Most of the routers use the same channel straight out of the box. If a neighbor has one close by on the same channel, it could interfere. Also, some wireless phones operate on the same range of frequencies. This could account for the coming and going of the signal, since they only tranmit when in use.

There are more than two computers on the network, but these are the only two that aren't in the same room as the router and are having the problem.

This is approximately how the house is laid out, H being the Hub, which sits on top of an entertainment center, which, according to my father, contains nothing emitting a frequency that would interfere with the signal. The * are the computers that are having difficulties with the network, and = are doorways, typically kept open.

Are you using the 802.11 platform router? If so, I believe that operates 2.4 GHz, which has plenty of power. That is important.

Exactly how many computers do you have total on the network, and where is the w/less router located?

Are the only two computers you have trouble with, also the only ones linked to the hub?

Some time ago I read a lengthy forum thread where a person was having the same wierd disconnect problems totally random. Eventually, he discovered (through a suggestion) that his microwave was interfering and kicking him off the network when anyone activated it while he was surfing! You say the hub is located on top of the entertainment center - I would check that out.

I will assume that you have carefully gone through the settings on your two computers and made sure they were correct.

No fluorescent lamps or wireless phones nearby ?

If you have the same problem with different routers (I'm assuming you mean ROUTER when you state HUB) and with more than one computer, that would lead me to believe there's either signal interference or blocking. Try moving the router into the other room and see what happens. The other possibility is that you have a problem with the wireless NICs in the two computers.
