HI wavey.gif

I've had this problem for a little while, sometimes it will work ok, but most of the time it doesn't.

I use IrfanView all the time, and I wouldn't be with out it, even with the problem. The problem I'm having is, some of my images won't post on here. I will take an image and resize it using IrfanView, like the last Desktop I did. The size was 500X375, when I tried to post it, it said it didn't take that kind of file...It was a JPG.

What I had to do was, take it to my PhotoImpact, and all I did was bring it up, and resave it, I didn't change anything, and it worked.

I just download the new version today, but it didn't help...I'm just wondering, if this didn't happened when I downloaded a new version the last time. It had always worked for me, as long as I resized it to width 500, and the height would automatically change. Now I'm wondering again biggrin.gif , should I be installing all the plugIns?? I don't think I did that the last time I up graded.

Thanks a bunch.

Hi Lorraine,

I think it's related to the color format, which may be set to RGB instead of CMYK...

Aside from the file format difficulties mentioned in the previous section,
there are a few other common causes of trouble with transferring JPEGs.

Old decoders that don't handle progressive JPEG will often give rather
cryptic error messages when fed a progressive JPEG.  If you get a complaint
like "Unsupported marker type 0xC2", then you definitely have a progressive JPEG file and a non-progressive-capable decoder.  (See part 2 of this FAQ for information about more up-to-date programs.)  Or you may get a generic error message that claims the file is corrupted or isn't JPEG at all.

Adobe Photoshop and some other prepress-oriented applications will produce four-channel CMYK JPEG files when asked to save a JPEG from CMYK image mode.
Hardly anything that's not prepress-savvy will cope with CMYK JPEGs (or any other CMYK format for that matter).  When making JPEGs for Web use, be sure to save from RGB or grayscale mode.

Photoshop also has a habit of stuffing a rather large thumbnail/preview
image into an application-private segment of JPEG files.  Some other
applications (notably early releases of Sun's Java library) are known to
choke on this data.  This is definitely a bug in those other applications,
but the best available workaround is still to tell Photoshop not to save
a thumbnail.  If you're putting up an image on the Web, having a thumbnail
embedded in it is just a waste of download time anyway.

When transferring images between machines running different operating
systems, be very careful to get a straight "binary" transfer --- any
sort of text format conversion will corrupt a JPEG file.  Actually that's
true for all image formats not just JPEG.

Check the top image, then the bottom one, it is a pretty color though. biggrin.gif

Doesn't sound like it but could the problem be a matter of optimization? Take a look at the file size of the images that don't post for you. Are they too large? We have a 75KB limit on attachments. If Irfan view is saving at a high level of detail as opposed to a web based setting your files may simply be too large. That green one is what got me thinking as it's lean towards a more contiguous tone would have a smaller file size than the origional.

Thanks Nightshade, biggrin.gif

I checked it out, and that was it. The one that wouldn't show up was 111KB, and the one in 'Post Your Desktop' is 34.2KB

Now, Where in IrfanView, can you go to change this without having to make the image smaller, or going to another program to resave it??

I see that PhotoImpact changed the KB size to less then a half, of what it was. Unless, as I said in my first post above, I have to download all the PlugIns?

I never had a problem when I first started using IrfanView, and I think I downloaded the PlugIns, and didn't download them when I up grades it. Not sure though. When I look at all the plugIns, it sure look like a lot, and not sure if I should download all, or just a part.

Will at least I know what is causing it, now just need to find out how to fix it in IrfanView. I don't see anything in there for optimizing the image, unless I'm just not seeing it.

Thanks for your help Nightshade.

I use Fireworks 3, and when I resize a .jpg, I set the image quality between 72 and 60, depending on the final file size an quality I want. Fireworks let me preview 2 to 4 windows when I can adjust various image settings and compare .jpg with .gif versions of them. biggrin.gif

My son use this freeware: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/vphotoresize.html

When you go to save the image, at the bottom of the Save screen will be a "Show options dialog", check that. The file size % slider should appear to the right of the image. 70% will take care of most images for the forum.

OK, I found it Jim, finely blushie.gif

Now that's all sorted out, thank goodness biggrin.gif

Thanks Chris, Paul, and Jim for all your help hug.gif

Chris, I'm sure Fireworks 3 is a good program, it's just IrfanView is so much faster for me to use, I use it for all my screen shots, and cropping and resizing.

Thanks anyway, hug.gif
