Full Version: Slow Opening Folders
Suggest A Fix PC Support Forums > Operating Systems > Windows XP
Gurrrr
I'm running Win XP Pro SP2, Pen 4 2.6 GHz, 512 RAM, 160 G HD. I run all the maintenance and malware programs every two weeks, including cleaning out my History, Temp Files, and Cache. When I click on one of my own Desktop folders it takes 25 to 30 seconds to open. It used to take 2 seconds. I'm on DSL and when I click on a link I can get a web page in 4 seconds.

It seems once I click on a Desktop folder and it finally opens and later I close it, then go back to it later, it opens within 3 seconds. So my problem happens only when I open the folder for the first time after boot up. Anyone have a suggestion other than going back 3 weeks and do a restore to see it that fixes the problem?
Ironbender
Hi Gurrrr,

Are tose folders deeply nested into other folders ?
Have you tried to clean your \windows\temp folder ?

It may be also some undetected malware infection... better post a HJT log here, just to see rolleyes.gif

Hi Gurr,
An obvious thing which may have inadvertentaly got left out, have you defragmented the drive after your cleanup? With the kind of file sizes that we deal with nowadays, its no wonder if the HDD gets fragmented sooner than we realise, causing slow down in file access among other problems. Gud Luck.
Gurrrr
Thanks guys for the input. The folders I'm referring to are the ones I make on my Desktop, I download photos to these folders. Yes I have cleaned out Windows/Temp Files. And I run Defrag after every cleanup. This is a new problem and I not doing anything different with the folders. They used to open instantly.

Here's my HiJack This log:

Hi Gurrrr...there is nothing malicious showing in your log.

Have you installed any new software recently?

Open the Task Manager and click on the Performance tab, then try opening a folder. Can you see any obvious spikes in CPU usage, Page File usage or free RAM while the folder goes through the process of opening?

You could also check the Processes tab to see if any application is using excessive CPU cycles.

Thanks HKEd. That's welcomed news.

Yes -- Robo Form.

Each Folder I clicked on to open would register between 70% to 95% CPU Usage as they opened, but this day, with Task Manager running, they all opened within 2 seconds, naturally. With the PC setting idle the CPU Usage ranged between 2% to 8%. System Idle Process was around 98% to 94%. The Page File Usage was an almost flat line.

Everything was fast today and then later in the PM when I clicked on the IE icon it took around 25 seconds to open. I'm thinking some program is going on-line checking for updates, or getting updates, and this may be causing my problem. Twice today I got an update from McAfee. I have a firewall in my DSL router as well as ZoneAlarm on my PC, so I allow/know what is looking for updates.
HKEd
It may well be that, Gurrrr. My system slows to a crawl when Avast antivirus is checking for and downloading updates.

You could try disabling this startup in Msconfig:

C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

HP's Backweb is spyware of a kind. It continually looks for updates, so that would be a prime suspect in my book. You can read about it here.
Gurrrr
Thanks much HKEd. I just took a look at the site and I'll go back later and study it.

You are right about HP Backweb. Everytime I run Spybot S&D I get about 25 "cautions" on Backweb. I don't "Fix" them though, I just tolerate them. Like you I have had my PC seem to freeze and then I would get a pop-up saying McAfee had just installed an update.

This morning all files were snapping open except one. When I clicked it I timed it at 55 seconds to open. That seems long enough time to take a nap. I'll start watching ZA to see if it is indicating traffic the next time I have a slow opening file.
