Hi, here's one for ya! - Great Site btw!
For some time now I've been having problems downloading service packs etc from ms$
for example:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

I Have:

XP SP2

Browser is Firefox 1.0.6
(but IE 6 also fails in the same way)

ZA pro
MS AntiSpyware
Norton AV

Tried disabling them all - same problem.

Here's what I get: (in a new browser window each time)

503- Service Unavailable.

"Server name could not be resolved

The address of the requested server could not be resolved to an IP address."

1 - every other Internet site works great

2 - laptop (w2k) ie6 also shows this when on same network, but if I use a vpn to the office, it works.

I'd like to know whether this is somehow a mis-config my end - or my ISP. I've tried clearing cache, re-booting,
loads of things...DNS somewhere is bust is suspect.

Thanks for any hints -

Hi simon moxley, welcome to SAF

In theory, this is a busy server error...
QUOTE
Introduction
Your Web server is currently unable to handle the HTTP request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that this is a temporary condition which will be alleviated after some delay. Some servers in this state may also simply refuse the socket connection, in which case a different error may be generated because the socket creation timed out.

503 errors in the HTTP cycle
Any client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) goes through the following cycle when it communicates with your Web server:

Obtain an IP address from the IP name of your site (your site URL without the leading 'http://'). This lookup (conversion of IP name to IP address) is provided by domain name servers (DNSs).
Open an IP socket connection to that IP address.
Write an HTTP data stream through that socket.
Receive an HTTP data stream back from your Web server in response. This data stream contains status codes whose values are determined by the HTTP protocol. Parse this data stream for status codes and other useful information.
This error occurs in the final step above when the client receives an HTTP status code that it recognises as '503'.

I tried the link you provided and it starts downloading normally. Does this happens always or ocasionally ?
simon moxley
It happens pretty regularly..like right now 'fer instance..
Ironbender
This may not be the cause, but have you tried to disable the Windows firewall ?

It's possible that your ISP is slow, but you may also have some malware running there... maybe you can post a HijackThis log here, just to see ?

If you are unsure on how to do that, you may take a look at this pinned topic: http://www.suggestafix.com/index.php?act=S...ST&f=15&t=16053

Hi Chris,

XP Firewall is turned off, since I use ZA.

Here's the output from hijackthis:

Hi Simon...you have a nasty BlazeFind infection, as indicated by this:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe

If you use a certain build of AdAware, you will not be able to logon to Windows again. It's an older version and pattern file for AdAware:

Ad-Aware 6 Build 181 and reference file 01R314 02.06.2004 or 01R320 19.06.2004

But don't use any version of AdAware (if you have it) until this mess is cleaned up. You have a number of trojan startup calls as well, but none showing as running, so it should be easy to clean those up. However, we need to address the wsaupdater.exe issue first.

Run a search for Userinit.exe and verify it's in two locations:

C:\Windows\System32

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\userinit.exe

If it's only in the latter folder, you may have to copy it over to the System32 folder.

Let us know and we'll take the cleanup from there.
HKEd
In addition, in HijackThis click on Config > Misc Tools > Open Uninstall Manager > Save List. Copy/paste the uninstall list and we'll see if there's any malware in Add/Remove Programs that can be uninstalled.
simon moxley
Hey guys,

Thanks for the help:

>>Run a search for Userinit.exe and verify it's in two locations:

>>C:\Windows\System32

>>C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\userinit.exe

yep - it's already in those 2 locations.

>> Save List. Copy/paste the uninstall list

Hi,

You said, earlier:

>>you have a nasty BlazeFind infection,

I did a bit of digging - and found this:

http://www.adoko.com/resource/blazefind.asp

But checking the registry - couldn't find the references it mentions:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\browser helper objects\{71ed4fba-4024-4bbe-91dc-9704c93f453e}

For example.

Also ran the symantec removal tool - it couldn't find blazefind either sneaky2.gif

So, checked the ms$ article on wsaupdater.exe - and found a ref to that in the registry under winlogon - removed it, rebooted, and.....

still the same, the download fails in the same place as before..

Cheers

I'm in Hong Kong, Simon, so I'm available at what appear to be 'odd' times.

There doesn't appear to be any uninstall option for any malware - WindowsSA would be present if BlazeFind was still installed - so we'll just use HijackThis (HJT) for the rest of the cleanup.

Close all open windows and run a HijackThis scan. Put checks in the boxes next to these lines:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pmnpcyhbj] C:\WINDOWS\System32\itlknby.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xql] C:\WINDOWS\xql.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lcpmbud] C:\WINDOWS\lcpmbud.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [evotonmh] C:\WINDOWS\evotonmh.exe

Click on 'Fix checked' and reboot to safe mode.

Make all files and folders visible:

QUOTE
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Run a search for the four files in the 04 group above and delete them if found. While in safe mode, run a full system scan with AdAware. Lavasoft have recently released version 1.06 so install that if you haven't already done so.

Reboot to normal mode and post a fresh HJT log.

BTW, using a file-sharing program like Piolet is now dangerous. If you use it just for MP3s, it should be OK, but video files can have hidden 'viewers' embedded in them.

Also, it is not possible to install Windows updates using Firefox.

Can you confirm that you are using both a router and a proxy server.

>>Also, it is not possible to install Windows updates using Firefox.

Yep, aware of that little "limitation" - nothing like browser independance, is there?

biggrin.gif

>>Can you confirm that you are using both a router and a proxy server.

Yes, the router is 192.168.1.1 - the proxy is controlled by my ISP - it seems that all HTTP traffic is proxied, once it gets out & natted.

ANDDDD.... I JUST TRIED IT....ANNNDD....

IT WORKS! - now

Many thanks!
