Hi wade,

Sounds like the master/slave jumpers are not correctly set.

Is you HD attached to the same cable of the primary master, or is it on another one ?

hi

no, ive had to make it slave, cuase if my dvd and cd-rom are in slave, for some reason my screen wont turn on. everything boots, fans run and hdd spins ,but no video signal to monitor. so current settins are:

pri master:cd-rom
pri slave:dvd
sec master: hdd 1
sec slave: hdd 2
do you think i have gone about the wrong way of doing this

hdd's are on the same cable and the jumpers r set to pri(old) and slave(new)

Ironbender
Ok,

So you do have your two hdd attached to the same flat cable.

Disconnect the slave hdd and try to boot.

Check the slave (disconnected) hdd jumpers. Normally, although ancient hdd will need it, slave HDD will need no jumpers, so, remove if any.

Shut down and reconnect the hdd.

Check if, on POST screen, you have all four devices listed (primary master, primary slave, secondary master and secondary slave).

If not, enter your BIOS settings and set primary slave to "auto"

Post back with results.

ok, no luck

i took the jumper that was set on slave out, connected the new hd and booted. in the bios is says not installed so on next boot i changed it to auto. then on another reboot on load up the sec slave was not detected.

could it be the cable itself, and i have these setiings on diables:PCI IDE Busmaster & S.M.A.R.T for harddisks , do i need these on abled

does the system boot normally when you do this ?

You new (second hand) hdd may be dead or is not compatible with your controller...

Can you post your motherboard and both hdd make and model ?

You can try to enable them, just to see what happens rolleyes.gif

yes, systems boots normally without 2nd hd.

mobo is ASUS K7VM4 and hd is Western Digital 205AA

Western Digital 205AA
good ole "Caviar" ATA hdd. biggrin.gif
And the other one ?
wade
maxtor : diamondMax Plus 8
Ironbender
OK, no compatibility problems between them. Your mobo is ASROCK K7VM4 and does not exist on ASUS website.

You may take a look at the link below, just to be sure that the Caviar disk is properly jumpered as slave:

This definitely indicates some sort of hardware problem. You should be able to place the drives in any configuration you want and still get video.
If possible, swap out the optical drives with a known good one (or try them one at a time).

It might also be something glitchy with your mobo.

It could be coincidence, but I would think that both issues have one cause.
wade
hi, couldnt it be that the hd is stuffed??

Unfortunately, I'll think that the Caviar 2nd hand hdd is dead. Can you try it on another system ?
wade
no, the only other system i have in the house is a laptop. im just gonna get another hd and try that.

thanks for all ur help
