Help - everything has been fine until now, and I haven't done anything out of the norm, but each internet page takes forever to come in - no matter what the site. I ran a virus check from Suggest a fix (at top) and it showed NO viruses. I also ran the disk defragmenter. No help with the problem there either. I've turned off my system and disconnected the power, no help. What else could it be? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP! Roxanne

Hi Roxanne,

Assuming that it's not a hardware problem, you'll better first check for spywares/malwares by running updated version of AdAware SE and Spybot S&D.
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
AdAware - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html

Please report also if you are using broadband or dialup connection to access the net, as it may be some local setting or something temporary, related to your phone line or ISP.

Hi, wavey.gif
To add to what Chis asked did you delete your temporary internet files and clear your history?

Thanks. Still slow. Here is my Hijack this log file, if you don't mind taking a look.

Hi Roxanne,
QUOTE
first check for spywares/malwares by running updated version of AdAware SE and Spybot S&D

You have some suspicious entries on HJT log, but as I am not skilled on it yet, you'll have to wait for some specialized member advice.

I see you installed Comet Cursors. This is a known spyware and MUST be removed (AdAware will do it).

The file ptsnoop.exe (from PCTel) may sometimes be related to a backdoor trojan. Do not delete it yet, just wait for more skilled advice.

Chris
HKEd
Hi Roxgro...if you're using a PCTel modem, it's very likely that Ptsnoop.exe is legitimate. There was a scare a few years back about a trojan using the same name, but in my six years of analyzing logs, I've never seen the trojan (if there ever was one 'in the wild').

Uninstall StopZilla! from Add/Remove Programs. It installs spyware. There are better alternatives. Also uninstall Comet Cursor, as Chris suggested. Both are likely to slow your system down.

Reboot afterwards and post a fresh log.

You should install AdAware SE Personal and use it to clear any remnants of the spyware.
HKEd
Chris...I'm pretty sure StopZilla! installs this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [abu] abu.exe
Ironbender
Yes, for sure...

About ptsnoop and related trojan, it's still alive here in Brazil eeeeek.gif (removed one last week on a win98 system with no internal modem, just connected to a broadband one rolleyes.gif )
Roxgro
Thanks a ton for your help - it's running better now. You folks are big help, keep up the good work! Roxanne
Ironbender
You are welcome Roxanne biggrin.gif

After doing this clean, and although your system seems to be running smoothly, I recommend you to post a fresh HJT log here, just to be sure.

Chris
