i am looking to buy a new tower pc, i would like it to consist of , a decent motherboard ,graphic card ,and hard drive, and ram, dvd writer ..my main use for the pc would be,
basic desktop publishing and playing the odd games,
at the moment i have a CELERON LAPTOP (ACER 242LC TRAVELMATE,2.4GHZ, 500MB RAM, 30GIG ULTRA HDD,
DVD/CDRW 15.0"XGA TFT LCD,
So, I WOULD WANT THE NEW PC TO BE A BIT FASTER, might as well why i am upgrading)..someone as recommended a semperon 3000, whatever that is?.
Could someone give me some idea of what would be the best for me to get for my needs, as i don't want to get ripped off , and any help would be great..thanks mark

hi sporty, taking into account that ur main function is publishing, im sur you would want to be multi-tasking.

In my opinion you will need a fast chip to run programs(adobe and corel and quark) smoothly, i would suggest looking at a pentium 4 processor(about 3.0ghz) with 1gig ram. this will allow fast calculations with the reliability of pentium.

As far as games are concerned, well the graphics card is your choice

I would almost concur with 'wade' but personally I prefer the AMD line - they are every bit as reliable as Intel and at the moment have the fastest cpu's around.

The only thing I would add is that if your are DTP'ing then go for a 17" Flat Screen with a response time of <16ms and if you can push the budget then get one that is <12ms which will do you for your gaming very nicely.

thanks for the reply someone said go for a amd 64, does this mean a 64 bit, as they are cheaper than pentium4,but i am not sure what motherboard comes with this type of chip?
graphics cards e.t.c i understand a bit more but boards and chips is a bit confusing to me!! and what does the response time with the tft screens mean, sorry if i have sounded a bit confused but it is to me!!
