Snelly!
Hi

I have xp with outlook express 6 as my main email client. It is logging itself into my messenger account automatically. I've selected for it not to in [tools/windows messenger/options] but it still does anyway. Its getting bloody annoying... how can I stop it. I use MSN messenger 7 for this purpose, but only when I feel like it.... unlike OE6 which wants me to be logged on all the time!

Snelly.

Hi Snelly!

Click <Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools>
Note: In Windows XP Home edition, Administrative Tools is in "Performance and Maintenance"

Click <Services>
Right-click on "Messenger" and select "Stop"

To permanently disable Messenger:
Right click "Messenger"
Select "Properties"
Change "Startup Type" to "Disabled" and click "OK"

Post back with results.

Chris

PS - Also, uninstall it from add/remove programs on left "add/remove Windows components"

Don't confuse Windows Messenger service with the chat messenger MSN. Windows Messenger is for communications within a network. Windows Messenger is also a tool for drive by spamming and popups. It's best if you remove it because you're not going to use it.

Hi again Snelly!,

1 - Uncheck it from add/remove programs on left "add/remove Windows components", (uncheck messenger box)

2 - Click <Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools>
Note: In Windows XP Home edition, Administrative Tools is in "Performance and Maintenance"

Click <Services>
Right-click on "Messenger" and select "Stop"

To permanently disable (Windows) Messenger:
Right click "Messenger"
Select "Properties"
Change "Startup Type" to "Disabled" and click "OK"

This will not affect your MSN Messenger services.

If you feel more comfortable, you can create a restore point before doing this.
