Hi there,

I hope somebody out there can guide me on this as I just don't know what to do. I've down loaded the software (Camedia) which came with the camera without any problems, but it says you only need to download the driver with Windows 98 (I have Windows 2000), and it gave no option to install it.

On connecting the camera to the computer, according to the instructions, the 'Add New Hardware Wizard' should appear and do everything without any further action on my part. However, it said something like the driver wasn't found (I can't get the message again as it only shows the Wizard box the first time you connect). I have tried what it says to do in the manual - which is mainly to check the device manager to see that the camera is listed (which it isn't). I have two devices listed with yellow exclamation marks by them - 'USB Device' and 'PCI Simple communications controller'.

When I try to use the Hardware Wizard to find the drivers (with the Camedia CD inserted) it says something like 'a better driver found for this device do you want to use it?' (I say yes) then I get the message "An error occurred during the installation of the device. The installation failed because function driver was not specified for this device instance"

I have been to the Olympus website but can't get much joy from there, or find the specific driver for the camera, which surely much be on the CD anyway or in Windows 2000.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I'm tearing my hair out! Thanks.

Thank you for that. I've tried the European site. The download is an acrobat file giving instructions which I've done but everything is still the same. I've also tried uninstalling the device and rebooting. It detects the camera but as an unknown device. The same when I uninstall and reinstall the software.

I've looked at the other two sites but am a little nervous about downloading non-European stuff - could it cause me any problems?

Also the message keeps saying that it 'finds a driver that is a closer match for this device than your current driver' but then when clicking next says the 'function driver is not specified'. It appears that it does find some sort of driver but I don't know what the function driver is or how I am supposed to specify it. I did get a list up at some point during my trials but Olympus wasn't on it.

I've emailed the European Olympus site but as of yet have had no reply. Maybe they will be able to sort it out.

Thanks very much again for your help - much appreciated.

Theorically, there is no problem downloading a foreign driver...

your camera should be detected as a USB device or USB storage device.
Are you sure it is not listed on USB devices list ?

You may perform a restore point and try to download the driver from Olympus Japan, which is a reliable site, and install it. If it does not work, you'll just need to restore your system.

Sorry for the first link, I didn't payd attention to it... The driver exist for Win98SE but I don't know how it will act on Win2k. sad.gif

My camera definately isn't mentioned on the device lists.

I think I'll wait and see if Olympus respond (though I'm not too hopeful now) and if they don't then I'll try plan B and download one of the ones you suggest.

Thanks once again.
