I removed my 256 MB memory stick to replace the floppy drive, then reinstalled in the same slot as before. Just by chance, I checked with Aida32 and it says 128 MB SDRAM. Then, I checked with Belarc Advisor, and it says I have 256 (it says Slot "A0" is empty, and Slots "A1" and "A2" each have 128 MB. I have 3 slots on my motherboard, and the stick is in the third one on the right.

Any idea why Aida would be saying I only have 128, while Belarc says I have 256? Is one of these programs more accurate than the other?

Thanks for any thoughts......log_splitter

Control Panel->System Icon->General tab. How much ram does Windows say you have?\

Have you popped the ram out and back in?

Hmmm...thought I had posted a reply (probably when the system froze, it didn't go through).

Anyway, thanks for the reply, Steve. I didn't know to check the memory that way. In any case, yes, I did remove the memory stick to replace the floppy drive, then put it back in the same slot. The red flag came up when I checked Aida32 for no special reason. It said I only had 128 MB SDRAM. I knew I had bought a 256 MB (about 2 years ago, so no chance for replacement). Anyway, end of story is that I think the stick was mis-marked. It says 256 MB, but no matter which slot I put it in, I only have 128. So, all this time, I thought I had 256.

It's actually getting confusing now. You see, when I put the 256 in originally, I also had a 128. However, the system only recognized 256 total. I *assumed* that it wasn't recognizing the 128 and was running off the new 256. I just decided to live with it. It wasn't until I removed the 128 (thinking it wasn't doing any good anyway) to put into another computer that I found out I was now running on only 128. That's what started all of this. That is how I finally figured out the 256 I bought is really only a 128 (paid for it, too.... mad.gif ) Oh, well, live and learn, I guess.

I still have to wonder why Belarc Advisor kept saying I had 256 (even with only the "256" stick in slot A1, it said 128 in slot A1 and 128 in A2).

In any case, I now have another problem (It'll be a new post titled IE Backups). I'm getting Illegal Operation messages and freezups again. I'm due for another reformat/reinstall, so guess I'll deal with the memory thing when I can. Thanks for the assist smile.gif
