Hi. New to your forums. Hope this is the right one to post modem problems.

I'm having a lot of trouble with my modem (Motorola SM56 PCI Speakerphone Modem). It often disconnects itself while I'm online, or tries to connect itself at random times when I'm offline (disrupting whatever I'm doing).

I suspect the problem is in the modem itself (I've tried two different drivers, but no help), so I wanted to try another modem (56hpsl) which I know is OK. The problem is, the Motorola won't let me uninstall it.

According to the Motorola Readme file, I should go to Add/Remove and uninstall it that way. However, when I highlight it and click Remove, instead of running the uninstall program, I get this error window:

(top of window) Microsoft Data Access Component.
Then, there is a red circle with a big "X" in it.
The text part reads:
Usage: muninst.exe
[/q] --Quiet mode
[/z] --No Reboot
<inf file>
Finally, there is an "OK" button

I tried going to Control Panel and clicking on Modems, then telling it to "Remove," which it did. However, there is an icon in Control Panel (not part of the Modems folder....this is a separate Control Panel icon) which is named "Motorola SM56 PCI Speakerphone Modem." I can't delete it, and it won't let me move it somewhere else.

When I tried installing the other modem, Windows won't recognize it, and thinks it still has the Motorola modem. Question: Is there a way to manually uninstall the modem software? I'd like to try the other modem, but can't get this one out.

Also, I have removed it through Control Panel > Modems, then turned off the system and physically removed the modem, then rebooted. Then, I turned it back off and installed the other modem. Device Manager is not showing a modem, but Windows still won't recognize the new one (I think because I can't get the SM56 software to uninstall).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.....log_splitter

Have you tried to "remove" or "uninstall" the modem from the Device Manager?

Thanks to all for the replies smile.gif A friend told me all I have to do is go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and find a file named something like SM56.cpl and delete it. Actually, I found two. They are sm56pci.vxd and sm56pci1.vxd.

For now, though, since a friend walked me through several days of modem/internet tweaks, the modem seems to have settled down (quit kicking offline, and is working faster). I guess I'll take a wait-and-see attitude. If it keeps working OK, then I'll just let it go. If not, I'll try removing the modem after I delete it through SYSTEM folder. That should work if I need it.

Anyway, thanks for your willingness to help! Much appreciated smiley- thumb up.gif
