My husband has Win98 on his computer, with plenty of drive space available; plenty of RAM.....running IE 6.0.

I installed Norton Anti-Virus and also installed Norton Personal Firewall 2005 for him. Now he is having problems with Outlook Express opening; at times he even has to reboot computer.....after several tries, he finally gets OE to open....

Is there a solution to this problem?

Hi Betty D. Barnard,

Norton AV is a heavy software. it have some security shields that must be manually configured in order to access the internet without problems.

One major problem with Norton AV is that it uses many Windows resources, definitely too heavy for Win98.

You can try to disable some features and see if it works better.

Norton works fine with Win98. Assuming the pc meets the system requirements (Windows XP Home, XP Pro, 2000 Pro, Me, 98,
200 MB of available hard-disk space, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later
DVD or CD drive), the program should work.

Keep in mind, if you meet the bare minumim system requirement, it will not run very well. I would recommend at least 512mb ram to run it well. NO matter what you have, Norton is bloated and the pc will be slower.

Re your problem, I would think you just need to create a firewall rule for outlook. Check the norton help files for "firewall rule."

Thanks Ironbender and efabes.....

Well, the problem was much simpler than anticipated!!!

When he tried to use the short cut icon on the desktop, it would not opern for him.....found out that if he went to the icon on the task bar, it opened immediately!!! Now why do you think that would happen?

Thanks again,
Betty

You are welcome Betty,

I can not imagine... except that the taskbar icon opens with one click and the desktop one with two rolleyes.gif

Maybe the desktop icon is lost or pointing to another file/location ?

Just right-click on both and select "properties"... I use to delete the desktop icon, as it just take space on my desktop.

You can also right click the working shortcut right from the startmenu, select "copy." Then right click the desktop to paste the working shortcut there.
