Hi

Is anyone having problems with the downloading of the latest Windows X P update?
After installing the updates, I could not open my Browser. I tried to fix the problem and could not, so I did a "System Restore" and every thing was working again.
After a few days, I tried to download the updates 3 times without success. For the moment, I have decided not to install the updates.
What can I do to fix this problem?

Thank you for any reply.

Souza

My OS is Windows XP Home Edition SP 2
My Firewall is ZoneAlarm Pro.

Hi Souza,

Had this problem just monday with a XP Home SP2... after updating, no more internet access (including OE), but broadband connected and some softwares updating normally. Just disabled ZoneAlarm and all worked fine again.

This may be a conflict with the WinXP firewall (never happened with XP pro for me, only with XP home SP2), or some IP range setting on ZA (still searching).

As my friend have safe browsing habits, I decided to let ZA disabled and XP firewall working, for a while.

Maybe some other people here can help deeply on this. (and maybe ZA will work again after the next update) rolleyes.gif

Hi Ironbender

Thank you for your prompt reply.
When the problem happened, I guessed ZAP would have had something to do with it - why oh why? (it is such an excellent product doing a very good job) I wish ZAP configuration was not so complicated.

On my computer, Windows XP Firewall is off as Windows had recognised that my computer is protected by ZAP and stated so in the firewall 's display panel.
I read somewhere that you cannot have two active Firewalls as they will conflict with one another.
Someone suggested that I tried to install one update at a time in order to trace the culprit.
However, I agree with you that the problem is probably caused by ZAP. I have never encountered this problem with updates before.
Oh well! There is always a first time for everything.

I am not game enough to snooze ZAP. Anyway what will that achieve as the updates were installed successfully but I could not opened my Browser.

I am working with both (Windows and ZoneAlarm) activated, and it's working fine, but I am using XP pro. Just had this issue with XP home.

Windows updates are very important, as they fixes some security holes, and it's strongly recommended to download and install them all rolleyes.gif

I guess that on the next update, this problem will be fixed and ZoneAlarm firewall may work again on my friend's system.

If not, I'll have to go back to my chalkboard and try to fix this by myself (quite a hard work and a lot of cold beers to drink) lol.gif

Yes, you are right Windows updates are important.
I have also read in a book that with Windows updates, it is best not to install the updates immediately. It is suggested that you wait one month to allow others to get the problems and by the time you install the updates, all the bugs would be ironed out.(we hope)

I think one month is a long time, I have been waiting two weeks.
Hum! the writer may be right there.

For sure, Souza. I do not allow them to be installed immediately, I wait 4 or 5 days... but it seems that XP pro is much stable than XP home, because I never had any problems with it rolleyes.gif

That logic depends on the severity of the threat. There have been several major virus outbreaks that were exasperated by people not patching (who also did not have adequate security).

If you do not patch right away, make sure you have a good, updated AV program and a good 3rd-party firewall.

Souza
Thank you both for the advice.
I have a good AV program. I also have ZoneAlarm Pro as my firewall.

Efabes, please explain what is "a 3rd-party firewall"?
I have not come across that term before.

To be on the safe side, I am installing the updates one at a time.

Hi
Just to let you know that after I spent countless hours trying to figure my problem, I have finally been able to download Windows Updates successfully (eleven of them).

To recap, something was interferring with the installation of Windows updates. I guessed that ZoneAlarmPro was the culprit somehow because upon checking ZAP I found out that all programs were blocked from accessing the internet (red X's)- could not do anything- did not know what was causing the problem.
Did another "System Restore"

Finally, after checking zonelab forum for answers I did the following: created a "Restored Point". I put my DNS servers and my DHCP -IP's in the Trusted Zone - allowed the changes to take effect etc
While chewing my fingers, I restarted Winsdows Updates installation.
Bingo, everything went smoothly and I was able to breath a sigh of relief - finally success.
