Happy Fourth of July!
Can I remove the partition between my Drive C and Drive D? That is my question. Here are my computers specs and more info concerning question:

Manufacturer: HP
Operating System: XP Home
Processor Speed: 2.7GHZ Celeron
Hard Drive Size: 40GB

HKEd helped me get rid of some nasties on my computer. Thanks, HKEd. My computer is working fine now. I was receiving a low memory error and some e mails were not able to be downloaded. The message I received was that there was not enough disk space or the computer was low on memory. I decided to back up my data and do a format of XP. I put in my Recovery Tools CD and chose Option 3. In DOS, I typed format D:. This formatted Drive D. blink.gif I realized what I had typed but I decided that I needed the extra space anyway. smiley- yes.gif I have already made the Recovery Disks. The format of D ended and then I typed format C:. The format of C began and eventually was completed. I then had to put in my set of Recovery Disks one by one and I completed that. I thought that I had the extra hard drive space. I set up my computer and then defragged the disk. I noticed that there was still a Drive D with 99% free space. There was a Drive C with 89% free space. I would like to know three things:
1.What is occupying the 5% space?

2.Can I deleted the partition between Drives C & D?

3. If yes, how do I do it?

I browsed the Internet forum tonight/this morning and found the category for partition problems and I read a post from someone asking how to deleted the drive D partition and I sent this one to myself. Would the same advice in that post apply to my situation? worm.gif

Why do you want to remove it?

That could be asking for trouble. You would need to purchase 3rd-party software and you still may lose data / have issues.

It is best to install your programs on the d partition. You can also use it to store data. If you have a non-hardware problem with the partition, the data should still be safe.

I formatted my Drive D so that I could have the extra hard drive space since I had already made my Recovery CDs and my Recovery Tools CD. The info I have from HP said that it was O.K. to remove this partition because it was only there because they put it there when they put the recovery info on a hidden part of the Drive C and thus made a Drive D. I have no need of a Drive D since there is no data on drive D now. worm.gif

You have two partions. C: is the primary partition, D: is an extended/ logical partition. If D: is only a gig or so, you may want to reclaim it into C:\.

If it is larger, it could be a good idea for data storage / "my documents."

If you choose to remove it, you need to be careful. The best thing to have done would have been to (edit) delete both partitons and then) create one partition before you installed anything. Since you have the O/S installed, you need to remove the d:\ partition and reallocate the space to C:\.

The best way to do this is 3rd party software. I do not recommend the newer version of Partition Magic. Check out Acronis Disk Director

I assume you want just (1) partition....right??

do you have PM 7 laying around......if so, boot to the rescue floppies and start deleting or re-sizing.

Hi moon,
Thanks for the reply. I don't have PM 7 here. I should get a copy I think. worm.gif
