Full Version: Application bar on XP?

I am new to Windows XP (just converted from Windows ME), and I am accustomed to having my favorite applications always displayed on a bar at the bottom of my screen for quick access. I don't have an application bar like that on my XP screen. How can I create one? In XP, I have to take the extra step of always going back to the Start Menu and then starting my applications from there. If possible, I'd like to eliminate that step. Is it possible? Thanks.

Hi vip4bham,

I like to have my desktop clean too... and launch my apps from the taskbar.

First, set your desktop to hide icons when displayed as webpage...

Second, right click on the taskbar and set it to show your apps without text and description. This will let only the desktop icons on it.

Last, create shortcuts of your favorite apps to your desktop.

Perhaps you're referring to the Quick Launch bar? Right-click a blank part of the taskbar and under Toolbars, check the Quick Launch entry. You can copy shortcuts from your program menu or desktop onto it.

There is a small taskbar on the bottom of the screen next to the Start menu, but it only will hold 3 applications. How can I expand it to display more. In order to see additional applications, I currently have to scroll over the "expansion arrow." Is it possible to have the task bar to display more than 3 applications?

vip4bham,

Right click on taskbar and unlock it. You will then see a small vertical bar close to your last visible icon. Drag it to the right, being careful not to move vertically. (If you move vertically you can end up with a large taskbar.) After you open enough space for your icons, right click on the taskbar and relock it.

Sure... right click on the arrow (or anywhere on the taskbar) and select properties... uncheck the "hide inactive icons" box.
