Hi

Not really sure if this a XP problem or hardware.

I recently upgraded my pc to :

AMD64 4000
ASUS GeForce 6800GT
Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200PT
K8NS Ultra-939

But since the upgrade i've had this annoying little problem, every so often the system hangs for a couple of seconds and the sound stutters. This only happens when i'm playing games or listening to music (either CD's or MP3's). I'm currently using the onboard sound card, could that be the problem? This problem is annoying when playing online games like EvE or Guild Wars.

Any ideas of how to solve this annoying problem?

cheers

Hi seraphim kai, welcome to SAF

If you are using another sound card, better disabling the onboard sound to avoid conflicts.

Hope this will help,

Chris.

Thank you.

At the moment i only have the on-board sound fitted.

Do you think i should disable the on-board one and fit an PCI sound card?

Seems to me to only happen when i'm doing anything that involves sound wacko.gif

Could it be possible that i'm overheating. The reason i say that is while back i had a xp2800, i used the AMD fan that came with it. After setting it all up I started testing out games etc and all my games kept crashing, turned out in the end to be the fan.

Yes, it's possible... have you checked your system and processor temp (and voltages) ?

Some games does not run properly with onboard sound, but before installing a PCI sound card, I would suggest you to reinstall the mobo and chipset drivers, just to see what happens...

Also, check for an updated sound driver online. There may be one that fixes the issue.

Just checked on the giga-byte website, all my driver versions are up to date.

But i installed a bit of software called easy tune to monitor my pc temperature.

It would appear at idle my PC is running at around 39c to 43c. While playing EvE online for about 5 minutes it shot up to 63c. Is this bad?

Is it the CPU or the system temp ?

This is because your graphic card is heating, normal, but you can drop down the temperatures by adding an auxiliary fan to your case.

If it's a tower, you can try to remove all the pci cards and reseat them in another way, the hottest far away from the processor and the power supply... there are many ways to optimize the air flow inside a tower, relocating cards, adding aux fans or opening blowholes on it.

Have you checked if voltages are within normal specs ?

Remove the case cover. Carefully start up/run the pc. You can also have a regular fan near the pc blowing into the case.

Start the game. If you do NOT get the lag with the case open/fan blowing in, it is definitely a heat issue.
seraphim kai
Thats the CPU temp.

To be honest I'm not 100% sure what the voltages for the 4000+ should be. The M/B i got dosn't show the settings in voltage.

CPU overclock is 200mhz

APG overclock is 66 mhz

CPU Voltage Control - Normal

AGP Voltage Control - Normal

VCore Voltage - 1.5

HT-Link Voltage Control - Normal

DDR Voltage Control - Normal

No idea if any of the above is useful.

How does it run without the overclock?

HI, Sorry for taking ages to reply, got caught up in "real life" things smile.gif

I looked at trying to underclock my CPU, but appears on my Motherboard you cant do that sad.gif

But i suddenly thought, it may not be my CPU or Motherboard at all, what if it was a Graphic Card problem. So i've started looking at forums for Nvidia. Turns out other people are having the strange hanging problem, but with all computer problems people have posted many ways of fixing it.

One way is to roll back the drivers to 66.93. This is strange thing. The latest drivers people have said that it has dropped the GPU temp, but ofcouse others are staying it made their GPU temp go up, in some case as high as 85c!. So right this very second i'm testing 66.93.

If that dosn't work. I read somewhere that Motherboards that use NForce3 dont like GT6800?!? I do hope this isn't the case as i've only had this new board a couple of months.

Anyway, I shall keep you posted on my attempts to solve this problems
