Full Version: MySearchNow Problem

Hi, I hope someone can help me.

My PC has managed to contract what I think is Mysearchnow spyware (via Messenger plus 3.0).

I've tried getting rid of it using AOL's own spyware removal, Spybot and Adaware from Lavasoft but I still have two annoying toolbars at the bottom of the screen and another at the top in IE when I open that.

I've downloaded and run HijackThis, the log file is below. Can anyone help please?

I don't know if it is relevant but I have just removed two viruses (Swizzer-CB and Swizzer-BQ) using Sophos.

I've never had to use HJT before, so an idiot's guide as to what I need to do would be appreciated.

Thanking you in advance, Andy.

The items that seem malicious to me, and that I would fix, are the following:

CODE

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =http://www.oiueygntkxzawcbe.biz/MWuRDRsnUY...dV/wPvYWX0.html

The following are programs that are starting up at boot that I can not find any information on and that I would remove unless you know what they are and that you want them there. I've never seen a non-malicious piece of software run from the Application Data directory, I have a feeling there's something fishy there.

Remove these and restart your system, If this does not resolve the issue then start your system in safe mode (instructions here) and run Spybot S&D and AdAware in safe mode and fix any entries that it returns. Then post a new hijackthis log and let us know what Spybot & Adaware found.

If anyone else has more advice for you they'll follow up.

Thanks.

When you say, fix the four items that look malicious, how do I do that?

I think the two files that are trying to start at boot up are the two that my anti-virus software removed and deleted. One of them was definitely in a folder called onebows and the other was in a folder called Sham Stupid Study? Does that make sense? What should I do about these two entries?
Digital.Control
I'm sorry I should have included that.

Start HiJackThis and select "Do A System Scan Only", when viewing the list of items place a checkmark in the box to the left of those lines and press the "Fix Checked" button at the bottom.

Personally, Unless that was the name of a piece of software that I installed, or that I knew was a component of Windows (those aren't), I would check those and fix them also.

They aren't related to a virus that I know of but I am not all that knowledgeable regarding the current virii that are around. It's been a while since I've actively kept up on the hi-risk virii and is something I should go catch up on.
Ref
Just removed the 6 items you suggested and that seems to have worked a treat - there was no need to boot in safe mode. PC seems a lot faster too!

Thanks very much for your help.

Your very welcome.

If you run into any other problems feel free to start another thread and who ever's available will give you a hand or if you reply to this thread I'll catch up with you when I come on.

Ref, Digital.Control, welcome to SAF!
HKEd
Hi Digital.Control...that's a typical LOP infection, usually installed with Messenger Plus!.

LOP provides an uninstaller:

http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe

Best course of action is to uninstall Messenger Plus! and reinstall without the 'sponsor'.
Digital.Control
HKEd & efabes,

Thanks for the welcome, I was just looking back at this and read up on the LOP infections, it seems I've cleaned this from several machines and just didn't know the name of it. I've also just found OmegaKillerSM, have either of you tried this? It's supposed to be aimed at removing OmegaSearch, LOP and it's variants specifically.

I'll have to give it a try the next time I see one of these infections to find out if it would be easier for users to use than HJT for removing these specific hijacks. As well as to see if it works any better, or easier than lop.com's actual uninstaller.

HKEd: I've heard alot about you, I hope you don't mind me stopping by and giving people a hand. Feel free to correct me anytime you see something I don't. I know that you have more knowledge about this than I do.
Ref
Just wanted to add that I had tried uninstalling Messenger Plus and it did not solve the whole problem.

Before uninstalling, the toolbars appeared as soon as I got into my account.

After uninstalling they only appeared when I opened up internet explorer.

Don't know if that helps you in future or causes more confusion but thought i'd let you know anyway!
