Hi,
Have just formated & reinstalled Win Me. After, I copied my back up of my address bk & also my last lot of emails & copied them into the places they came from, eg. Win Me Address book was replaced with the backed up copy & the old emails were similarily copied into the place they normally reside within Windows/Application Data/Etc. assumming when I opened the Outlook Express program, there they would all be...! Wrong!
Upon restarting my email client, I found I couldn't access these two precious files with all my old data. Then all I got when attempting to go about reimporting the normal way via the address bk tool, was the following message:
"Address Book - Main Identity. An error occurred during the import process. The Import process couldn't be completed"
I have uninstalled the O.E. Email client hoping a reinstall would 'fix' it, but to no avail...
Any help would be appreciated please.
Mike

You may want to explain:
1. How you created the backup files.
2. How you "imported" the backups,
3. Whether you still have access to the hard drive with the original files still on it.

Hi Alfons,
To answer your questions:
1. How you created the backup files?[/B][/U]

I burned to cd disc the backup from the original hard drive the following files - my 'Favourites', my 'address book', & lastly my current emails . All were copied & pasted to a folder in 'My Documents' called 'Backup' which was all then burned to a cd disc. After many attempts I also tried to import the 'address bk' from a floppy as well, but still with same resulting message.

2. How you "imported" the backups?

After formating C: drive, I then installed Win Me. I then proceeded to intall all my other s/ware required onto the Pc. After I got the Adsl connection up, going & tested in IE & OE, I copied & pasted the back up files to their respective places that they would normally reside. I also deleted the 'new' Win Me folders of - 'address bk' & the email folders they replaced.

3. Whether you still have access to the hard drive with the original files still on it? [/B][/U]

I no longer have the original access to the hdd as I have formated it. It may be worth mentioning it was a Win 98 Se Os, & now I'm wondering if the new Me Os. can't receive the old Win98 Se files for Oe. backed up emails & address bk.
BTW - my copy of the 'Favourites' folder replaced the one created within the Win Me Os, worked flawlessly & IE now shows all my current 'Favourites' as they were under Win 98Se.
Also the message I got after attempting to 'attach' my old emails into & to replace the new emails folders, resulted in OE quiting functioning. It did give a error number which I'm sorry I forgot to write down. Anyway, as a result, I had to uninstall Oe, restart, & then reinstall Oe just to have it to open again... alot of hassle...

So you see my problem. I am prepared to format & try again, but it takes hours & I'd rather not if it is possible to avoid doing so.
Your comments would be helpful please...

Hi Mike, what file did you save as your OE Mail Backup (the full path please) and where did you paste it exactly?

Mike7
Hi Alfons,
Thanks for your assistance. This morning I have managed to import the address book into the Win Me version of OE. I accomplished this by sending the Address bk. from my other Pc as an attachment to the new Win Me Pc. I then went thru the import process & it has worked. Now I have at least got all my contacts imported into the Win Me Pc which I'm very relieved about. However, I am unable to get the old email messages to import ...(as yet...)

Now to answer your questions:

Hi Mike, what file did you save as your OE Mail Backup (the full path please) and where did you paste it exactly?

The full path was - C:/windows/application data/identities/(some type of folder name with many letters & numbers)/microsoft/outlook express,
(the current place OE folders are listed). I actually copied the OE. folder with these email folders within it thinking it would be the way to go... Perhaps I was wrong as I cannot open them to imort them as my 'Main Identity' file. I had originally just copied the email folders from this file into the proper place that they would normally reside, deleting the ones that came with he new install of Win Me. But this only caused OE to be unable to open & function. I then needed to uninstall Oe, reinstall it again, to be able to continue.
I then pasted it into the correct place that it would normally reside (as shown above)
Hope all this makes sense to you.
Look forward to any help when you can please.
Cheers,
Mike

I haven't been successful as yet in importing the email messages across...
Any further help available...?

The files you need have an extension of .dbx. When you run the Import Wizard, select Outlook Express 6 and then tic the option to browse for the folder that contains your files. Once pointed to the proper folder, it should import all of your mail messages. There may be two locations with these files, the original created with the installation, and the ones you copied over. If in doubt, and you still have a copy of the original files on a disc, you can import them directly from the disc.

Hi Jim,
I have tried both of the methods you have described, but with no success. I think I'll just have to forget them. Anyway, I have my address book copied over now & that's far more important to me. Thank you for your help,
Mike
