I'm receiving messages that state that a message sent by me has been rejected by the recepient, either because the recepient is unknown or because it contained a virus. The problem is I didn't send these messages. Also, I'm receiving messages from I assume my ISP that state an incoming message has been blocked due to a virus. I use an up to date copy of Norton and I ran a virus check and there were no viruses, I ran SpyBot and no problems were detected. Where are these messages coming from that I supposedly sent?

MANY viruses steal contact info from peoples address book. They then disguise themselves and send themseleves out.

In other words, someone you know that has your address in their address book is the infected computer.

Hi jdurkot,

They are probably fake messages. Now it's common, unfortunately... some spammers are sending fake messages to force the recipient to open them and than verifying that e-mail address is valid, or to install a malware or spyware or even a virus.

If a virus on your system had sent itself to your contact list, you'll surely receive some warning from some of your friends or contacts.

It's recommended to not open it (I let the view pane of my Outlook express deactivated, so I can delete them without viewing. when I am in doubt, i take a look on them by right-clicking and opening message source on properties tag).

By the way, Spybot S&D is a good program, but it's not sufficient. I recommend you to download and run AdAware SE and SpywareBlaster (after update them).

It's also wise to check for viruses on some housecall online.

Hi Steve... I was answering at the same moment. I's a possibility, but I have received a lot of fake message with headers like that, most of them containing some counter, or script to trace opening rolleyes.gif

If you know you did not send them, just delete it.

It is a social engineering trick. People are curious or think maybe something they did send was rejected. They open the email to view it and a script is run (if the pc is not protected).

You can try a program like mailwasher to block these also.
