Have HJT fix the one nasty for sure and the possibly nasties as well unless you can positively identify them as necessary to your system. After you have them fixed, reboot and see how things look.
tf_hutton
I removed the "nasty" plus others, rebooted and scanned again. Here is the log: Doesn't look like much changed.

Hi tf...man, you sure come up with the nasties. That's the dreaded Aurora infection. We'll need some tools. Back in a little while.
HKEd
Have you disabled any startups using Msconfig or HJT? If so, reenable them and reboot. Post a fresh log.
tf_hutton
Here's the fresh log. I had to repair the XP installation for a problem that I posted about under the Windows XP forum. Everything (nasties) are still trying to load to startup. This computer belongs to a client who has lived with these infections for a while.

That looks straightforward, but what happened to this one???

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

That's the Aurora infection. There are hidden files loading it.
tf_hutton
I deleted that Nail.exe setting using HiJack This earlier. Microsoft Anti-Spy had been blocking other start items but I allowed them to run to get a better scan and log file. Here is the latest log. It's 1:00AM and I must rise early so this will be my last post tonight. If you have any tools or suggestions please post them. Thanks. By the way, Aurora popups are still occuring.

Nail.exe doesn't leave the building that easily! It will be back.

There's a tool to detect the files that load it - FindIt's. Unzip it and click on FindIt's.bat. It will take a while to run the scan, then generate a log file.

You'll need Killbox again.

There's also a BAT file that I'll post later.
HKEd
Copy/paste this to Notepad:

@ECHO OFF
cd %windir%
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
cd %windir%\system32
attrib -s -r -h DrPMon.dll
del DrPMon.dll
exit

File > Save As > 'All files' > FixNail.bat. We'll use it in safe mode after I get the FindIt's log.
tf_hutton
Here's the log file from Find It. I created the FixNail.bat file and saved it to the desktop. I also downloaded killbox to the desktop. The popups went crazy when I generated the log file.

This is not at all like a typical Aurora infection. unsure.gif

You can delete all those files with an ICO (icon) extension.

Let's try a straight fix and see if anything comes out of the woodwork.

End process on these:

C:\WINDOWS\system\tptiixvjhv.exe

c:\windows\system32\mxsrjc.exe

Fix these:

Boot to safe mode and locate/delete these:

c:\windows\system32\mxsrjc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

c:\windows\system32\mxsrjc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log. Also a SilentRunners log. It will give us a better picture of what's going on.

I stopped the processes identified, fixed the items from HiJack This, rebooted to the safe mode and deleted the other items. I also found and deleted the file "Nail.exe" from the windows directory. Here is the new HiJack This log and the Silent Runners log:

It's morphed, but FindIt's should have found the Aurora files. It was designed to do that.

Need another log - RKFiles. This one must be run in safe mode only.
HKEd
You could try using Killbox on these in safe mode:

C:\WINDOWS\system\jrlkdb.exe

c:\windows\system32\muxlxml.exe

C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe

C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
HKEd
I'll just post this while I have it handy:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\SvcProc]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\SvcProc]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\SvcProc]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Services\SvcProc]

Copy/paste to Notepad, save as 'All Files' Svcproc.reg. Double click on it to merge. It will get rid of this:

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Another part of the Aurora infection. But the file is not showing. wacko.gif
tf_hutton
Booted to Safe mode. Ran Killbox first. Copied and pasted each entry one at a time. Set it to kill on reboot, including ending explorer shell also. Ran Rkfiles. Will post log. Copied Windows Registry Editor to notepad and ran it. Websearch is still trying to add itself to startup. Here are the log files: (HJT included):

C:\HJT\rkfiles

Good...RKFiles shows the infection so we know what to use Killbox on. Most of those files are baddies, but there are a few legit ones I have to double-check.

Any sign of Nail.exe returning? SvcProc.exe loads it.

Back in a little while.

New HJT, SilentRunners and RKFiles logs please.

I'm getting some lunch. Back in about an hour if you're still around.
tf_hutton
Followed your instructions. Found Nail.exe in the HJT scan and in the c:\windows directory. Deleted it. However, it's back in the new HiJack This log and in the windows directory after restart. It's 2:10 AM. Here are the logs. I was hoping I could resolve this tonight.

Told ya it was a bugger to get rid of!

Next step is to create a dummy Nail.exe, end the Explorer shell and copy the dummy over to replace the real file using the command prompt. Don't think you'll fix it tonight. Want to try again tomorrow? I'll post the details later.
HKEd
Open Notepad, go to File > 'Save as' > 'All Files' and name it Nail.exe. Save it to C:. It's a zero-byte file.

Click on Start > Run > type cmd and click on OK to open the command prompt. Leave it open.

Open the Task Manager and end process on Explorer.exe. The taskbar will disappear. Leave the Task Manager open.

At the command prompt type this, pressing Enter after each line:

cd\

copy c:\nail.exe c:\windows\nail.exe

Close the command prompt when you get confirmation that 1 file has been copied. Go back to Task Manager > File > New Task and type Explorer.exe and OK. That will bring the taskbar back.

End process on this:

c:\windows\system32\honcgsz.exe

If the system has been rebooted, there will be a different random file name.

Fix these:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bngqmmo] c:\windows\system32\honcgsz.exe

Killbox these:

c:\windows\system32\honcgsz.exe (or whatever the random file name may be)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\finpaq.exe

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qanda.dll

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\uoslty.exe

C:\WINDOWS\assest.dll

C:\WINDOWS\del.tmp

C:\WINDOWS\demoresoxe.dll

C:\WINDOWS\greece.exe

C:\WINDOWS\iempg2.dll

C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\tdtb.exe

C:\WINDOWS\wiesasp2.dll

C:\WINDOWS\wommolkqywn.exe

Run Svcproc.reg again.

New logs again please.
tf_hutton
Followed your instructions to the letter. This seems to be the problem:

04 HKLM\..RUN\: {sexhpm} c:\windows\system32\uopdoma.exe

Everytime I 'fix" it using HJT it returns under a different name.

We're chipping away at this slowly but surely. There's a file showing that I could not find conclusive info on. It now appears to be malware so use Killbox on it:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vmgkmys.exe

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Xcite.dll

c:\windows\system32\uopdoma.exe << Whatever file shows in the SilentRunners log with ["TODO: <Company name>"] after it.

Is Nail.exe still coming back?

tf_hutton
I "Think" I solved the problem. I followed these instructions from a friend.

"Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/nailfix.zip

Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Choose "clean" if prompted during the scan.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked. (Still in Safe Mode}

Restart your computer in normal mode and run HiJack This again and check for infestations."

I've rebooted several times and ran Hijack This several times. I've added Spywareguard and Spywareblaster. I'll uninstall Ewido prior to returning the computer. Here's the latest HiJack This and silent Runners logs:

That's a clean log. smiley- thumb up.gif

Ewido was going to be my next step. It works for some, but not all. This was not a typical Aurora infection as some of the files associated with Aurora were not there - Bolger.dll, DrPMon.dll etc..

Anyway, good that it's fixed. Let's hope it stays that way. smile.gif

Again, thanks for all the help.

You're welcome.

You may like to search the registry for any references to these:

C:\WINDOWS\system\tptiixvjhv.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\webstr.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system\jrlkdb.exe

It won't do any harm if you leave things as they are though.

I searched for those files but couldn't find them. I hope they don't exist on this computer anymore.

The SilentRunners log shows the files have been deleted. It's just the registry startup calls. They're 'orphans' now, so it's not a biggie.
