Full Version: Browser Modifier
Suggest A Fix PC Support Forums > Security > Malicious Code: Viruses, Trojans, Spyware and Browser HiJacking
jj9294_2000
Hi, I'm new to this board and in definite need of help .. 2 days ago MS Spyware detected a Browser Modifier and deleted it .. or I thought it did. Now every 15 min, typically when browser is auto refreshed, the following address pops up:

http://c:/Program%20Files/Norton%20SystemW...ck/register.exe

and page displays only

[Blocked Ads]

because I also have Ad Hunter.

Below is the Hijackthi Log, as you can see I have, what I thought a very secure layered system, yet apparently not full proof. Hope someone can Help.

Bit more info:

MS Spyware no longer detects any known issues, nor does .. adaware, spybot, norton antivirus, ewido, a square, nor online scanners such as Trend Micro

Welcome to SAF, jj9294_2000.

There is nothing malicious showing in your log. The URL you posted resolves to this site:

http://www.c-span.org/

I'm not sure what the problem could be.
jj9294_2000
MS Spyware keeps picking up and deleting a browser modifier .. other's don't. The URL I posted is c:drive based and keeps popping up .. every few minutes .. driving me crazy. any ideas what i should do?
HKEd
Did you disable any startups in Msconfig before posting the log?

I'm not familiar with GoBack. Can you disable it while troubleshooting this? Perhaps rename Register.exe to Register.old.
LF from MC
GoBack, is like System Restore. I have it on My 98 computer.
jj9294_2000
Norton GoBack is like Windows system restore. I've had it along with Norton Internet Security and Antivirus for a couple of yrs without problems. Nevertheless I did the following:

Removed Norton GoBack and deleted any trace keys from the registry and using JV16 Power Tools. I ran a scan of MS Spyware and it picked up another spyware and deleted. I then installed Spy Sweeper and it picked up and removed 3 spyware .. dialers .. and 4 modifiers. Then I used JV Power Tools again and cleanup all unnecessary regisitry keys (orphans) and went into SAFE MODE and deleted all temp files and anything I felt didn't look appropriate. Still in Safe Mode I ran MS Spyware again and picked up and deleted a browser modifier. I rebooted and Spy Sweeper locked up on me. Tried a few things, can't get it going anymore so i deleted it and any trace registry keys and folders. Went into safe mode ran MS Spyware , deleted the browswer modifier again and cleaned registry again with JV16 Power Tools.

Forgot .. during this process my Process Guard kept a browser modfier from making a global hook. Perhaps this let MS Spyware to finally delete it in Safe Mode.

VOILA!!! past 1 1/2 hrs .. no more problems.

guess persistance pays .. I was a few minutes from giving up and turning IE Explorer off and using only Firefox.

Do we always have to suffer like this????
HKEd
Hi jj9294_2000...yes, I know about GoBack. I just wasn't sure if Register.exe was necessary, or what part it was playing.

Anything that locks down the registry has to be disabled to fix any infestation.

I haven't picked up anything since swirching to Firefox about a year ago.
