Hi folks,I have had a linksys wireless-g 2.4ghz broadband router operating in my house for the past 6 months without any problem whatsoever. This router is connected to a desktop pc (with an ethernet connection) and is also connected to an external modem(with an ethernet connection).I had this router installed in order for me to operate my sony viao wireless laptop.
My isp provider is ntl and a few days ago I lost my broadband connection.I contacted them and they said they were having a few problems and that normal service would be resumed.
The internet connection has resumed but I can't get the internet on my laptop anymore.
My external modem is connected to the desktop pc via a usb port.
My router is connected to the external modem with an ethernet connection and the router is also connected to the the desktop pc with an ethernet connection.
I phoned ntl again and they said that the internet will not work if both the usb and ethernet lights on my external modem were flashing.
My wireless router seemed to be working ok until the internet connections with ntl were experiencing problems.
Basically I want to have internet access for my laptop and desktop pc.But I can't get any internet access on my laptop. The only way I can access the internet on my desktop is to disconnect the router.
Help please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My desktop and laptop both have windows xp as their o/s

Hey Lemmington, Welcome to SAF!!

Just to check does this accurately represent your layout?

CODE

Modem=ethernet=Router =ethernet=Desktop
|                                                               |
|----------------USB-----------------------------|

Now I will say that this isnt my forte but I have just struggled with wireless so I can give you the benefit of my failings biggrin.gif

My first suggestion would be to disconnect the Modem USB to Desktop connection, thus allowing the connection to flow from the Modem to Desktop, via the router, with no confusion for the Desktop.

I would also suggest that you check the router settings, as they may now be out of kilter with NTL. After a bit of reading, it appears that you need to ensure the Router has the same MAC address as your Desktop does. More info can be found Here, but if you get at all stuck, then of course, post back.

Also check that the wireless channel used on the laptop is the same as the router.

I hope this goes someway to correcting your problems!

You did not say if you have DSL or Cable, but the following is what I do for my Comcast cable setup:

If you have made changes in your hardware hook-up, return your hook-up back to the way it was before you had problems. We know for sure that it worked that way before.

Try a forced reset of your router. Do the following in exact order:

>First, unplug the cable connector from the router to the modem.
>Next, unplug the power cord to the modem and wait 5 full minutes.
>Re-plug the power cord back into the modem; wait a minute for it to settle down and stabilize. On my Motorola modem the 5 lights go hysterical for a minute, and then settle into their proper pattern.
>NOW replug in your router, and see if you are back to normal.

If still no joy, view the connection from the router to your units - your network connection. Is it normal? Now view the modem connection: chances are this is where your problem is. I can't quite understand why your broadband service will not walk you through the setup of your modem - that should be a piece of cake for their tech support dept.

After you get your network up&running again, I suggest carefully going through all the menus and writing down the settings in each screen. It will take a few minutes, but the next time you have problems it will pay off big time.

Thanks guys,I have tried all of the above without any success. My laptop recognizes the router and says that the siganal strength is excellent, but will still not let me access an internet page.
I took out the router and just connected the external modem straight to my laptop and the internet was ok.
My set up is.........
External modem<<<<<<<<<<<usb connection from modem to desktop
Router<<<<<<<<<<<ethernet connection to modem
Router<<<<<<<<<<<ethernet connection to desktop
And as I say again folks I cannot access internet from laptop and the only way to access the internet on my desktop is with the router disconnected.
Could my isp provider changed any of the settings on my pc's ????????????
When I phoned them to say my connection was down, they were asking me for ip addresses.
Many thanks for any more help. sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif
It is a cable modem.
