I have a lot of spyware on my computer and have run bazooka, ad-aware, Microsoft anti-spyware, and SpySweeper, but some of it still hasn't gone away. I think I finally got rid of WebsiteViewer, which had a file called 124718.exe that would put a porn icon on my desktop and open windows every 10 minutes. There is still something that is linking random words on websites and in Trillian to Wikipedia definitions. Any suggestions on what to do or what to delete would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Thank you so much for your help! I followed your instructions and hopefully got everything. I kept getting the error message that the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll was in use by another person or program so I could not delete it, but I think it did delete anyway. I hope so. Looks a lot better. That 020 can be tricky to remove, but it's just a registry item if drct16.dll has been deleted. Let us know if the file is still there. We can use a program called Killbox on it.

If you didn't deliberately install Viewpoint Manager, you can uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs.

It looked like it was fine after yesterday and I removed the last things you mentioned, but this morning I started getting links for words in my chats again and when I shut down there were several windows saying it had to end programs that I did not recognize. The registry call is still there, but is the file?

If it is, we have to look for a hidden file that reloads it.

That file is likely a component of the Haxdoor rootkit trojan. It's called a rootkit as it operates at the root of the operating system. Very tricky to remove, not least because it's files are mostly invisible.

Download this file and unzip it.

You must (at the author's request) boot to safe mode and run it there. It will take a while to scan, so be patient. It will generate a log. Save it and post it in your reply.

Not quite what I expected from Haxdoor, but all those files have to be deleted.

Use Killbox. Copy and paste these lines to the 'Delete' box one by one, but this time don't OK the reboot until the last filename and path have been pasted:

C:\WINDOWS\drexinit.dll

C:\WINDOWS\ms1.exe

C:\WINDOWS\tool.exe

C:\WINDOWS\ms4.exe

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll

After pasting the last line, accept the reboot prompt. Do any files show?

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll is still there. The other four files are no longer there.

That is not good news, sarusuberi.

Let's try another 'finder'. Download DllCompare. This can be run in normal mode. Start the program, click on 'Run Locate.com' and wait a few seconds until the scan says complete.

Click the 'Compare' button to start the sorting process, then 'Make a log'. Let's see what that shows.

Hmmmm...

Try using Killbox again, this time with the 'Replace on Reboot' and 'Use Dummy' options. See if you can delete the dummy file.

Do you have your Windows CD? Is it full retail, OEM or other?

I did that and the drct16.dll file was still there; however, this time I was able to delete it without getting an error message. I don't know if that means it will be back or not... the main effect I can see it having on my computer is on Trillian, which I have tried to uninstall, but I get error messages for that and it will not allow me to uninstall it. I wonder if I got the file...

If Killbox worked properly, the file was replaced with a non-malicious dummy which should, in theory, be easy to delete. Hopefully that's what happened and the file is gone.

Can you fix the 020 line in HijackThis without it reappearing after a reboot?
