The beast turned on but the cd rom drive wouldn't open, and all the peripherials wouldn't work. She called me and asked me to ship her computer back but I need to get it fixed first. Please please someone help me figure out whats wrong. This is a old compaq presario 5070 with a amd-k6 processor. She has three hard drives inside too. Shes running Windows 98. Any help???

Thank you to anyone who can help.

When you turn the system on do you hear any kind of beeps or tones?

Not a good sign that all your peripherals don't work. If you power up, and it is getting beeps exactly like normal, that sounds like it is booting but you can't see it. Try switching to your new monitor-perhaps the old monitor died. You can also try pulling the BIOS battery for 1/2 hour to reset the CMOS back to default.

If none of that helps, pull the cover and check that none of the cables jiggled loose. Pull them off and re-plug back in again, including the power supply cable. If none of that helps either, I am afraid your unit has gone to that great CPU in the sky.

There are probably two fans in that machine: the CPU heatsink fan, and the power supply fan (the power supply exhausts through the rear of the computer at the top of the case). Are both of them spinning up or only one?

So, we have power to your fans, but not to the CPU. That means the computer is not even reaching POST. As I see it, there are only three things that would cause this:

>Did you reset your BIOS back to default as I described?

>Remove the cover of the unit, and pull off the main power supply plug and re-plug it in to make sure of good connection; this is the power cord running from the power supply and plugging into the mainboard. It will be the largest electric plug in the case, with several wires running into the same plug.

>Pull your memory stick and re-seat it to check for bad connection. Your unit is so old that finding memory to replace it is almost an impossibility, although others on this forum may know of sources.

If none of the above works, and you don not have a power supply tester to check that all the leads are active from your power supply, that leaves only the mainboard itself having failed. In essence, that is not repairable. It may not be your fault, eventually everything "wears out", even computers.
