I replaced Norton Antivirus with Avast 4 home Antivirus in a machine yesterday. Ran Norton and Spybot before deleting Norton from ADD/REMOVE then ran searches for Norton and Symantec and deleted those folders. Ran AVAST as soon as we installed it and it found seventeen Beagle32 or whatever they are, all of them were RESTORE /TEMP files. Did I unleash them when I told Norton to Delete the Quarantined files when the uninstall asked? Hope I didn't open up a can of worms. eeeeek.gif Did I do wrong? I do not know how to use the Restore Feature in ME, since I still run 98. Educatated opinions are welcomed wacko.gif ! Thanks!

I'm sure it's OK, Berta. If you have any problems with avast! finding malware, post a HijackThis log so I can check it.

Here's how to disable system restore in ME:

Disabling or Enabling Windows Me System Restore

Once that's flushed out, you should be fine.

Thanks, HKEd
When I get back to that machine, in a day or so, I will check Microsoft Windows Help and look at System Restore to see how it works. My guess from what you said, is that by turning it off, it purges any files in there. Then it can be turned on again...or not. Thank you for the direction.
If I need to post a HijackThis log file, should it be posted in this thread or under Security/Malicious code...forum?

Full details of how to enable/disable SR at that link, Berta.

Post the log in the Malicious Code forum please.

I found how to disable the System Restore and how to turn it back on just fine, thank you. But, what do I do between the disable and the enable other than restart? What did I miss? blink.gif I should turn it back on, yes? Before I send a HijackThis log file? and set restore points?
Avast! found a new Win32 Beagle-AH (wm) today and we deleted it as was instructed by Avast! It was a fresh e-mail, not something formerly in the Restore/ temp file.
HKEd
Nothing. When you disable Restore, it flushes out the files. They're gone.

On my XP system, I don't even reboot. I don't think it's necessary.
Berta
Thanks, that is what I thought.

Then I need to enable it again, and set some restore points?
Don't these things ever run without a hitch in something? banghead[1].gif
