Ever sense I installed SP2 for Microsoft Windows XP Professional my DVD burner won't read cd's of any kind what so ever. Here's my burner's specs:

DVD RW ID: IDE1008
Firmware version: 0159
Buffer size: 2 MB
Serial number: AD76FD5E

Do any of you have a idea on how I can fix this problem without formating my hard drive or going back to SP1?

Hello and welcome to SAF!

First, make sure that the dvdrw is still recognized in the bios. If so, check to make sure it is in the Windows Device Manager. If it is, right click and uninstall it. Reboot. Windows should detect and reinstall it.

What software are you using? Some software does always want to connect. If SP2 is now stopping it, that could cause problems too.

Post back your results.

I've already tried reinstalling the drive, checking that it's detected
by my bios and all of that... and it's not only when I try to use
software to access cd's with it. It's any time. For example: If i go into
"my computer" while the drive is still trying to read the cd, the
explorer shell will lock up till I take the CD out. The wierd thing is that it
will read and burn DVD's though.

It will burn and read dvd's but will not read cd's? I have heard of that and it is not easy to diagnose/fix.

Have you checked for a firmware update on the mfr website? This could be a firmware related issue.

It could also be an SP2 software issue. I know Nero has a SP2 update. You might need to check the compatibility of all of your software (any burning software loaded into memory could be causing the problem.

The drive may also use different optical lines for cd's than dvd's. It is possible the one for cd is malfunctioning. The SP2 update may be coincidence.
