i was told to post hear, my pc (for no real reason it seems) turns off and restarts it does it everytime i run a virus scan every time i try to put anykind of CD in it but most of the time it does it for no reason at all i thought it was overheating at first cuz it had done this to me befor there was a fan inside that had gotten cloged so i cleaned it and it was fine but i rembered that when it had done this befor it didnt restart and it made a strange noise after shutting down so i dont thing its overheating then i thought it was somekind of virus but it dosent seem that its that eather thair.gif i know alittle about the inside of a pc but know next to nonthing about the softwear and stuff i also looked inside to see if there was anylose cables or anything and i didnt see much of anything so im stuck and dont know what is wrong
Dan Penny
Whew, that's a long sentance.

Does the machine act this way when you boot with a boot disk of any kind, or only when you attempt to boot from the hard disk?
aruora
ummmm....... lol i dont even know what a bootdisk is >< i just start it normaly but it also does it in /safeboot when i run a virus scan
efabes
Are you talking about safemode?

If it still does it in safemode, I would also think heat is the cause. Check to make sure all of the fans are still working, especially the heatsink fan.

You could also try to carefully run the pc with the case open. Place a box fan near the pc blowing into the pc. If it does not shut down with the external fan blowing in, it is definitely a heat problem.

Post your results along with system specs.
aruora
i realy dont think its a heat problem. the heatsink was cloged befor and i fixed it and its not acting like that this time befor when it overheated it would not restart on its own and now it restarts everytime it shutsoff and that also dosent seem to add up cuz it does it every time i run a virus scan it shuts off. i would try this anyway but lol i dont have anykind of fan i have central AC and never needed a fan >< and i cant drive to go get one >< as for the info on my pc well im not sure my husband made it with a friend about a year ago and both him and the friend are navy and out to sea
aruora
also the pc has been being run with the cover off for about 3 days and the inside of the pc dosent feal overly warm
efabes
You should not run the pc without the cover for long. Any charged object the hits the mobo can cause a short, though this is not the cause of your immediate problem.

Download HijackThis (link below). Unzip it to its own folder and run it. Click the top button to run/save the log. Copy the entire log and paste it below into this thread.

This will show running processes, including any malware that could cause this problem. We can take a look for you.

aruora
ok about the heat thing i rembered that when i turn it off at night and try to run it again in the morning it runs alot worse then it did the night befor so it seems to actuly run better when its warm i dont usealy turn it off so i had forgotten this
efabes
You do have LOTS of things running. Many things are not necessary as background tasks - they can be run when you want them (Various norton garbage, realplayer). Other things are not necessary at all (reminders, some BHO's). Norton is notorious for being a system hog. AOL can be as well.

You say it also shuts down in safeboot also? This would normally indicate a hardware problem (for hardware that is still loaded). However, if it also crashes during a virus scan, I might start to suspect Norton as the cause.

aruora
ok so if this is the problem how do i fix it ?? are there files that i can and should get rid of ?? i hardly ues anything but the internet and play online for a internet game that i play anything eles for the most part can go lol any sugestions?

Hi aruora....

Aruora, what you want to do is first get your system cleaned up in the Malicious Code and Virus Forum , and follow HKEY_Ed's advice exactly, and do everything he tells you to. He is one of the foremost virus-remover experts around, a real guru, and there is very little he does not know about malware removal. Your computer is very badly infected with malware, and this could cause the problems you are experiencing. Please follow his direction until he tells you that your computer is clean. After that we can address your mechanical problem here.

[this person has a current post in the Malicious Code forum that Ed is working on, and in that forum I told her to come over here after he is through if she still had problems]
aruora
ok so pc is clean and still not working right ; ;
ranchhand
Well, reviewing what we have here, the most common mechanical things that cause looping reboots are:

>Overheating: I know that you said that you cleaned the heatsink, but check all the fans. Also check the power supply fan. If it is clogged with dust, the PS will overheat and either shut down or burn out.

>Bad memory: Next, go HERE and download Memtest (free). You can download the ISO to burn it to a CDrom, or download a bootable floppy. Follow directions, and let it run for at least three hours on your computer. If you get even one fail notice, your memory is bad and that is causing your reboots.

>Faulty CPU heatsink installation: since your hubby built this himself (which is great, by the way!) it may be that he did not properly apply the thermal grease that goes between the top of the CPU chip and the bottom of the heatsink. If the grease has "dry spots", or he used too much and it has run down the side of the CPU, that could cause random reboots. This is a hard one, do not attempt to remove the heatsink yourself if you have never done this before.

>Faulty Power Supply: this is uncommon, but I have seen several instances of where the power supply develops a bad circuit which will cause reboots. The only way to test this is to 1. replace the power supply and see if the rebooting stops, or 2. use a power supply tester to test that the continuity of the circuits is solid. Again, if you have never done this, get an experienced friend to help you.

Wish you the best! smile.gif
