Most folks here prolly have already heard of this, but just in case:

http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/googkle.shtml

I hit it this morning with a test machine and NAV promptly went bonkers. Lovely! tongue.gif

Thanks DB...it's so tempting to go there, but my test machine is in the parts bin. biggrin.gif

Well spotted DataBabe - unfortunately this kind of thing is rife nowadays. One has to be so careful when entering Web addresses - especially the highly popular ones - as malware providers may well have bought up the common mis-spelt ones to catch people out in exactly this way.

I mean, how many times have you typed 'googkle' by mistake, only to have to backtrack and get rid of the 'k'?

My favourite typos at the moment are:

pront (for print)
somesone (for someone)
googkle (for google)

As I am not a particularly great typist, this is another reason why I'm glad my home machines are Macs. ;-) The scary thing to me is, this ancient phishing method used to be just a way for porn sites to rack up their hit count.* Annoying, but not really dangerous. Now it's flat out malicious, and often criminal. :-(

HKEd, I am SOOOOO tempted to sacrifice my one and only Windoze machine (a doddering IMB Thinkpad running Win 98) this weekend, assuming the site's still up. The proxy at work is blocking all the "good stuff" (I guess I'd better hope the SecurityHounds don't suddenly notice and start wondering why DB was bouncing off of sites categorized as Computer Crime yesterday morning, huh? lol); it'd sure be great practice. S'pose I ought to make sure first I know where that Windows 98 CD is...*G*

*Funny related story: years ago, a friend and coworker was in $Big_Manager's office, helping him with a project. They decided they needed to check for some info on the Nasdaq website, and my friend, who was sitting at $Big_Manager's computer, duly typed in http://**www.nasdac.com (spelling is not his strong suit). A moment later, Pamela Anderson's b**bs were all over the screen. $Friend stared in absolute horror (well, so he told me), and sat there paralyzed...until $Big_Manager dropped a hand on his shoulder.

"Don't worry about it. I did the same thing last week."

**link intentionally broken - you guys wanna see that kind of stuff, I ain't giving you a direct line. Go find it yourselves. I'm sure there's wives on this board somewhere. *G*

Thanks for that DataBabe - of course, when someone picks up a browser hijacker and they start getting popups pointing to these nasty sites, that too racks up their hit count.

This means that they are prepared to pay more money to the malware writers to produce more of the same, so they get even more hits.

They cannot seem to get into their dense noddles that just because they got a hit it doesn't mean it was a wanted hit - people try to close these things down as quickly as they appear without even bothing to look at what they say.

And I think all of us here wouldn't even want to go searching for that rubbish anyway, whether via Google or Googkle smile.gif

LOL - I didn't think so either, but it's Friday and I'm a little punchy. And I did want to make sure the link was broken (don't even know if it still works); this seems like a nice place and I'm on board to keep it family friendly. smile.gif

The link was OK, DB. Nasdac has been taken over (it sez) by Pool.com. No Pamela Anderson's anything. sad.gif biggrin.gif

I just had to check it. icon_smile_mischievous[1].gif
