Our computer keeps changing the date to 2141 for the year. We have ran spybot search and destroy, adaware, spyblaster, installed spyguard and I have ran a hijack this log. Could you look at it and help us out??

Thanks,

Hi Liz1836,

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else! If you're unsure how to do this, then please see the HijackThis Introduction (link in my signature).

There are a few items that require attention here. Can you do the following please:

  • The Kodak Updater is optional, and the jury is out on whether it ought to be removed or not. If you wish to remove it, then please press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following process:

    C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater88971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished. This item will appear in blue in subsequent instructions so you know it's optional.

  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

    O2 - BHO: My Search BHO - {014DA6C1-189F-421a-88CD-07CFE51CFF10} - C:\Program Files\MySearch\bar.bin\S4BAR.DLL
    O3 - Toolbar: My &Search Bar - {014DA6C9-189F-421a-88CD-07CFE51CFF10} - C:\Program Files\MySearch\bar.bin\S4BAR.DLL
    O4 - Global Startup: MyWebSearch Email Plugin.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE
    O4 - Global Startup: Kodak software updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater88971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html...?p=ZPinw001XXUS
    O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/funwe...etup1.0.0.8.cab

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

  • Reboot into Safe mode by tapping the F8 key during the boot sequence and selecting Safe Mode from the menu.

  • Using Windows Explorer, delete the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\MySearch

Reboot as normal afterwards. Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

To be fair, the only baddie you have is the MySearch toolbar; you can get better ones such as the Google toolbar, and I'd recommend that one if MySearch is one you use a lot. But let's get you clear of the rubbish first!

Malware doesn't usually do thing such as set your date incorrectly; usually malware foists endless popups on you and/or hijacks your browser settings. So although it's sometimes useful to get a "health check" I wouldn't be surprised to find your problem persists after this fix. But let's take it one step at a time!

Cheers.
liz1836
Thanks for responding. I did everything you said to do. I did have a problem going to safe mode however. I couldn't get there. I know how to get there the computer just wouldn't do it. Every time it would shut down. I tried removing c:\program files\MySearch from the system. Was this wrong to do? The date on the computer did change when I rebooted to the 2141 so there is more going on. Here is the new HijackThis report.

Thanks,

Liz

Hi Liz...what method are you using to get to safe mode - F8 or Msconfig?

You were right to delete that folder.

The log looks fine. As Angoid posted, there's nothing showing that could change the date. Have you checked the BIOS?

I use the F8 to go to safe mode. No I have not checked the BIOS and I am not sure how to. Could you help me with that too? Do we have virus of some kind that is changing the date?

Thanks,

Liz

Hi Liz...going into the BIOS can be very dangerous. When the computer starts, you generally see a message like: 'Press key to Enter Setup'. That will take you to the BIOS where all system/hardware info is stored, including time and date. I would not recommend you do that without someone experienced with you.

There are some viruses that change the date, but no recent ones. eTrust should have caught anything like that.

To use Msconfig for booting to safe mode, go to Start > Run > type msconfig and OK it. Click on the Boot.ini tab and then the /SAFEBOOT box. Click 'Apply' and OK, then reboot. Reverse the process to get to normal mode.

Thanks, I'll get someone to look at the BIOS.
