When my system starts up, I get this message:

This apploication has failed to start because commcoss.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I don't know what this means, I sure could use help on how to fix this window popping up at every start up.

Thanks

Commcoss.dll is from some adware program (I did not find which). You may have removed or deleted part of it already.

I will move this post to "malicious code" for better response.

Start with this: Download, install, update and run both Adaware and Spybot (one at a time, see links below). Make sure you set Adaware to do a full scan. Allow each program to remove any malware that is found.

When you have done both, restart. If you still get the warning, download HijackThis, unzip it to its own folder and run it. Click run scan and save log and post the ENTIRE log below (in a response in this thread).

I removed adaware a several months ago, so I can not run it.

It wont matter that you ran it in the past.

You need to download the newest versions of all three programs. You need to also update adaware and spybot.

The problem dll is listed as malware. These are the best removal tools.

Thanks I'll give it a try.

Hi Mijme,

Once you've updated both Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware and had them independenty perform full system scans, you may find the following instructions useful on providing a HijackThis log.

Post the log back into this thread and we can take it from there.

Like virus scans, performing an Ad-Aware / Spybot scan using old definitions will mean that the newer threats they might detect will not be rooted out. Malware changes all the time as exploits are discovered, thus old definition files are really not a lot of use.

HijackThis works by targetting the methods rather than the nasties themselves. This is why it lists lots of required, legitimate entries.
