My PC boots up normally, up until the Windows XP logo 'loading' screen. Then instead of getting a login screen I get the blue screen of death with the message 'unmountable boot volume'. So, I simply popped in my Windows CD and run the Recovery Console. I use the 'fixboot' and 'fixmbr' commands, but I still get the blue screen of death regardless how many times I do it. I've also tried disableing all start up apps, including some Windows services, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. However, it runs fine in Safe Mode.
In order to get my PC to run, I have to keep restarting it to works (I only get the blue screen of death about 70% of the time, other 30% it runs normally). When it does work, my PC does not have full functionality. Many programs refuse to run, but some work fine. For example, my IE won't run (though I can access the internet) as well as many applications such as virus scanners. WMP10 doesn't work, but WMP Classic works fine.
I've made no major changes to my system (other than occasionally unplugging my CD drive's power) and I'm baffled at how I can fix this or what the problem may be.
Any ideas?

When I try to run chkdsk from the Recovery Console it keeps freezing at 25%.
I'm not sure how long it takes to finish when I run fixboot or fixmbr, but it finishes almost instantly, which strikes me as odd.
I've also found another strange problem. When I run my PC overnight, I am unable to open any programs with sound.
Media players (WMP10, WMClassic, DivX, ect) give me a 'codec not found' error when playing videos or music, and games run without sound. However, when I leave a program running overnight, such as Windows Media Classic with a video paused, or leave a game running, the sound works fine (though if I start another program I can't get the sound to work).
I have fully updated Windows XP Home Service Pack 2, and updated sound drivers. Though, my last sound driver update was long before the problems started.
Any thoughts?
Edit: MY computer attempted to run chkdsk at bootup. It also freezes up as well, at 0% of the second stage:
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
File verification complete.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
0 percent complete.

Try running chkdsk in Safe Mode and get back... we need to get though chkdsk /r so run it after you get chkdsk to run 100%.

one other thing that hit me before I suspect the HD (and as a last resort) pull all cables except the keyboard, mouse and pull all PCI cards except video.. then make sure the video drivers are upto date and start again with chkdsk from safe mode.
