I have a computer that has been successfully running a raid stripe 0 array for three years. Recently, a weird phenomena has occurred:
1. On cold bootup, the Promise array is shown as "not defined". This happens every cold bootup, but not if the computer is "restarted" while running. (The Promise controller is built into the MB.)
2. After cntl-alt-delete, the array is "functional" and bootup proceeds.
3. Occasionally the computer boots the rest of the way and runs normally. At other times, the process locks up with a blank screen, just before the Windows xp screen should show up. Once it locks up, only a reset will get it moving.
4. After this series of manipulations, the computer boots the rest of the way, and runs normally.
Things I have checked:
a. I have replaced the cables to the IDE hard drives... no effect.
b. I have checked CMOS... Same as it has been. The BIOS was flashed about a year ago.
c. There is no slowing of the computer clock, so battery may be ok?
d. Nothing unusual shows up in device manager.
e. I have run CHKDSK from a dos prompt before loading windows. No problems found..
f. I run a software and hardware firewall, use a virus scanner regularly, as well as two ad-ware scanners. Windows xp is updated as soon as Microsoft comes out with a new patch.
g. No new programs have been recently added or downloaded to the computer.
Any ideas what the problem may be?
