I experienced quite a few strange goings on [ windows would/wouldn't close--e-mail windows difigured...etc.]and eventually the system became unusable...found I couldn't access the latest updates for AV...then found a folder called ''.Trashes'' and another one that looked like an executable that hadn't executed/ found its ''needed opener '' ??? called ''DJ_Store'', on s seperate drive

Both of these were 'apprehensively' deleted [ from refuse as well].. hdds [in a RAID config, re-set] and both drives low-level formatted...but the problem is not solved...have since re-installed my OS, but can't access the AV website..will flashing the BIOS make any difference???

..a shout for help...

Hey Steve...

...AVG [7.0]

Has anyone experienced any problems like I have[ starting with windows hanging, general malaise and eventually everything ceases to work...or does anyone know what ''it'' is that's causing these difficulties

the files mentioned that I did find were .Trashes and an executable called ''DJ_Shop''

Thanks

If you suspect a virus might be causing it, then it might be worth doing a Trend Micro HouseCall Online Virus Scan.

Go to the top of this page, and mouse over Virus Info. Click on Free Virus Scan from the resultant dropdown menu.

Download the HouseCall online virus scanner and have it scan and fix all hard drives on your system.

Then try to update AVG again and perform a full system scan with it.

Do you suspect that there might be anything else malicious on that box, usually evidenced by a lot of pop-ups or your browser being sent to unwanted websites? If so, then there will almost certainly be more work to do!

I use AVG 7 and sometimes I am unable to update just wait a while and try again and it works.

DO NOT FLASH THE BIOS this situation has nothing to do with the bios needing a update.

If you want to reinstall the OS again wipe the MBR first, use a 98 boot disk and type fdisk/mbr then delete all partitions and then when installing xp set the partitions etc.

Angus and Zen,
I used the trend scan...there are 4 files infected with a Trojan...
'' KILLCMOS''

These files cannot be ''cleaned''...should they be deleted or what is best course of action?

sounds to me like the ''origin''/action/? has something to do with my BIOS...I haven't flashed it as yet...what now?

found the source of KillCMOS...it is a file for revealing CMOS passwords !...this was a file downloaded from BOOTDISK.com as part of a set of tools for XP...boy, do I feel stupid, sorry about that...still, when found I thought 'this is great'' found the problem...anyway, I did, but it seems to be a goose chase, wild at that!
now, I'm flumuxed...don't know whether all these problems were anomolous or whether there is something alot worse on my system...just have to wait and see....

no doubt....I will let you know...

Thanks to you...
