Full Version: Speed up a 98 machine

I'm trying to help a friend speed up a machine running win98. She lives a distance away, so I'm trying to advise her by phone.

I first told her to get ad-aware, spybot and AVG free. They deleted out some gambling spyware and no viruses detected (with definitions updated on all programs).

We're trying to do a scandisc , with auto fix errors, before doing a defrag. I told her to turn off the screen saver, go into task manager and end all programs except explorer and system tray. When running scandisc the program stops and says another program is running or writing to disc and can't continue. " Attemped 10 times, do you want to continue?"

Tried in safe mode with same result.

How can we get scandisc to complete so we next defrag?

Thanks,

Gary

Boot to raw dos and run scandisk.

Boot to raw dos method 1;
When starting the system, start tapping the Ctrl or F8 key just after the POST screen (when it says Starting Windows 98....)

Boot to raw dos method 2;
Start, Run, msconfig. Click Advanced (near the bottom right). Place a checkmark in the box for Enable Startup Menu. Reverse the above to remove the Startup Menu.

At the C:\> or C:\Windows> prompt type in;

scandisk/all/autofix

That did it, Dan.

Thanks,
