And be careful. Any executable file received in email can be dangerous.

Most of the time you get that message because there is no program that will open that type of file, which gets us back to Ironbender's question, what extension is it? I am not sure about this in Win 98, but you might try Right click once on the file, Properties and see what information you can get.

I checked the attatchment and there is no extension.
Its a picture. I was able to open it when i first recieved it. It was in my suspected spam program where i first opened it. But when i transferred to my email program is when i get the question about associated programs.
Any suggestions for opening picture attatchments?
There was no text message sent along. Only subject header. Fwd.here.
Thanks all for help.

Calli that doesn't sound safe to open. Are you sure it's from someone you can trust?
If you're absolutely certain, try giving it a common extension like JPG. Macs from what I experienced don't use extensions, so it can be as simple as adding the JPG, BMP, or GIF.
But be careful!

No extension may be "hidden" extension. Do not try to open it. If it cames from a trusted friend or address, ask the sender first if you can open it safely, and with what software. This seems to be a malware or virus.
Note that if you was able to open it the first time and no more, your system may be infected. Never trust on attachments, even if they came from trusted addresses.
I have disabled preview of OE6 because of that, and only open attachments after viewing the mail by clicking on it with right button and scan all properties.
Beware that some of your friends may be infected and sending e-mails without their knowledge.
Suggest you to check your system by running a good antivirus and some spyware softwares.
Never try to open .exe, .pif, scr, .vbs or .zip files without checking them.
