Since installing the latest critical update form Microsoft each time I try to use my address bar in internet explorer it comes back with an "invalid syntax" message. Is there any way to fix this or get around it?

Have you tried removing the update (in Add/Remove programs)? The update may have corrupted. You can also try a repair of IE in Add/Remove. Clicking it (if listed) and hitting the Remove button should give you the option.
