Laptop not working

Question My second hand laptop is not working properly. It was working good until some things that belonged to the former owner were deleted. I can't get on the internet like I could before. After turning on laptop this showed up on the monitor screen.

'No domain server was available to validate your password. You may not be able to gain access to some network resources'

What's a domain server? And what does all this mean? Working with Windows 98

Thank you

must have been using a college network/ WIns server or the like......

open the Network control panel, then proterties on
"Client for Microsoft Networks"
then General panel, uncheck "Log on to Windows NT domain", then OK your way out.....and see what happens.

More....!!!!

a domain server is a server/computer that's running a server OS, like windows server 2003. It/or the domain server handles all the requests, etc. So a computer that's joined to a domain will try to log onto the domain so it can get authenticated and access the network resources.

The previous owner must have used one.

Right-click "My computer", then click on Properties. Then click on "Computer Name". There's a setting there that lets you pick between workgroup and domain. Use the workgroup setting.

If the machine was previously set up to log onto a nertwork domain then you wil have an extra box at the bottom of your login window to specify what to log on to. You want to change this drop down menu to log on to the local machine. *EDIT* This only applies to Win2k/XP wink.gif

A domain server would hold all the user account information etc for a secure networking environment .. ie a business

If you aren't going to use the PC on a network then you should probably set the PC up so as not to be on the domain but on a workgroup .. do as moon suggests above and enter a workgroup name

Tony,

You never said what ISP/connection you have been using.

Is it DSL/Cable/Dial-up ???

It's hard to know, what it was of the previous owner that you deleted.
