hi everyone. just realized that i have a win98 boot disk cdrom (one file listed is btcdrom.sys which it puts on the ramdrive it creates.
here's a dumb question.
if i format my hard drive, will i still be able to use the disk? i don't have a floppy drive i thought 98 wasn't bootable through the cdrom?
thanks people.

It may or may not be bootable. I have three editions of 98. The only one that is bootable is the 98SE Full Edition. I have an SE upgrade and a regular 98 cd that are not bootable.

Change the boot order to cd rom first. If you want to be paranoid, pull the power cable from the harddrive. Start up and see if it boots.

Chances are, you will need to use adaptec or nero to create a "boot cd."

You can also google for instructions on creating your own.

You are correct in that it wont work if you format (without a floppy). Your motherboard also needs to support boot from cd (not such a big deal now-a-days). Whatever you do, test it BEFORE you format!

Not all 98SE CD's were bootable. Do you have 98SE or just 98? I'm not sure if you mean (by "boot disk cdrom") a floppy or CD.

To determine what you have (bootable/non-bootable CD) before you format, look in the root directory of the cd for boot files. (Command.com, io.sys, msdos.sys, and drvspace.bin.) If they're there, the cd is bootable. If not another way to tell is shut down and set your bios to boot from the cdrom first, and the hard drive second. Put the CD in your drive, then save the changes to your bios. If the system boots to the CD your\'re all set. If not, without a floppy, you'll need a bootable CD to set your system up. If you know someone with (or you have) a burner, you can make a bootable cd with the Win98 directory copied from the cd on it.

hi. will log off to check the bios. and boot up.
if it does, how can i format the drive and access the cd without a floppy drive. the drive is new, but i think the viruses this has is stopping it from being recognized and used. i really need to format the system. somehow. i can't use any of my programs but i.e. due to the virus.

hi again. i went to the bios and changed the boot up. cdrom boots first, no searching the hard drive.
these are the files listed on the ram drive that it creates:
aspi2dos.sys
aspi4dos.sys
aspi8dos.sys
aspicd.sys
autoexec.bat
btcdrom.sys
btdosm.sys
command.com
config.sys
ebd.cab
extract.exe
fdisk.exe
findcd.exe
flashpt.sys
himem.sys
io.sys
mscdex.exe
oakcdrom.sys

i need to format my drive and i have no working floppy drive for unknown reason. (all attempts, including replacing the drive have failed).
can i do this using this cd? thair.gif
(sorry, but this is getting very frustrating!!!!)
thanks for the help guys.

Search the disc for format.com. Or, just type format at the prompt and hit Enter. If present, then it will open. I don't see it on that list, but it may be on the disc. FDisk is there, which is the program used for creating partitions.

hi. i tried that. nothing happens.
if i format my hard drive, can i use this disk to boot into the system without a floppy?

What virus do you have? There may be another way.

Scratch that.

I see you posted about it in "Malicious Code..." Answer Hked. He is one of our resident experts and will be able to help you clean the system. It may take some back and forth. There may be some delay with the different time zones, but it should not take more than a day.
