Full Version: Taking control of "My Network Places"

Anyone know a way of taking control of what appears in "My Network Places". It's becoming a real pain.

I don't know if I can just delete irrelevant shortcuts. Edit: It looks as though I can just delete the irrelevant ones and maybe even add a shortcut to the workgroup.

Some shares show up twice.

Where the shared folder is on the same computer it's changed the reference into a local shortcut. This is bad, I need the reference listed in full UNC form so when documents are linked the link is in UNC form. Edit: I guess I can't fix this, windows always tries to "simplify" filenames.

Where the machine has a long "friendly name" it shows this in front of the shortname, making it very hard to read. I guess I just have to rename them?

I guess maybe the only answer is to ditch a lot of shares but some are usefull to some of us sometimes.

Or maybe have more than one workgroup. But that's crazy on a <10 pc lan.

Actually I much prefered the Win98 format where it listed the computers not the shares.

I always turn off simple file sharing and unshare the default shares then re-set it up as I want it.

Sorry if this is stating the obvious but in the last month or so I found a simple trick to reorganise the "My Network Places" folder.

First change the folder option to "Details". Then sort by computer name. The result is a heading for each computer followed by all of its shares.
