To make a long story short, I have W98SE, deleted my 3Com network device and rebooted system to re-install. (I was having instabilty issues and wanted a fresh install)

Now after my password to get into W98SE, it finds the new hardware and starts to install but a white box error comes up "Your program is making an invalid dynamic link call to a .DLL file"

I click close and the computers just sits there....goes no further.

HELP???

Thanks-
Jim

Start with your boot disk or hold down the Ctrl key during bootup until the Startup Menu appears, and choose "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" from the Startup menu.

Change to the C: prompt, type scanreg and press Enter. You do not have to be in the C:\Windows\Command folder to run the command.

Choose the Resotre option and pick the date right before you made the change.

If this works, download the latest Win98 driver (there could be a newer one on the manufaturer website) and update the driver from the device manager.

Post back if this does not work.

Ok, here is what happened:

- I started in safe-command prompt...but scanreg complained there was no himem driver in place...and wanted 'command prompt only' chosen vs. 'safe mode-command prompt only'.

- so I restart with command prompt and did scan reg...it found no errors.

- I look at the 'restore points' for my registry and the most recent is 8/16/04!!!! over 3 months old!

- Also, I had previously downloaded the latest 3Com driver and prior to removing the NIC, I tried to update the driver...it gave me that same error message, but the system didnt crash...the NIC still functioned but the driver date was now %date% in the device properties.

- I then removed the NIC and rebooted to get to my current state.

Ideas? I would hate to revert to an August backup.....angryfire.gif

Sorry this response is so late. I was waiting on comcast.....

If you have the windows cd, run sfc:

http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgen...001011114021106

This should replace the mising/damaged files...
