Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum. I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed of if this is the wrong forum. But.....

I'm a WISP Administrator and having a major problem with my laptop and I need a quick fix. I am unable to receive any packets while statically assigned an IP address. It sends fine but it never receives any. When I plug in direct to a router and obtain a dynamic address I can get online. If I am statically assigned I cannot. I also can't while being plugged into a switch with a static address on my network or wireless bridge which is what all our clients use, I still can't get on the net or access their equipment which brings me to my next problem: I basically cannot work without this!! We do not use a DHCP server and I am required to always use a static IP to access the internet and to troubleshoot at a clients house or business.

This first just happened to my internal NIC about a week ago. I figured the problem was some sort of driver problem or possibly some weird hardware issue. To temporarily fix this problem, I threw a PCMCIA NIC in. Well....this morning it happened to the card. I'm beginning to think it's some sort of virus. I've found a few posts by guys having similar problems but no replies to them. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. My email address is jmartin@fibernetcc.com. Please contact me with any fixes.

Oops....the title should say static rather than dynamic.

Anyone have any solutions?

Hi, and welcome to the site,

You should be aware that suggestafix do not provide tech support through email but on the boards only. This way others can benefit from the experience and knowledge explored thereafter.

this is an odd one isn't it though ? .. I had the same thoughts as you at first reading this .. driver or weird hardware issue
Have you tried resetting the router/switch too ?

My first impression is that you could indeed have some sort of virus or malware/spyware.

I would recommend that you use the tool called HiJackThis to examine the pc and post it's log here. Searching the forum and/or Google will yield you lots of info on using HJT too. Get some anti-malware programs installed, updated and do full scans. Spybot - Search & Destroy, Spysweeper, and Ad-Aware are available to download and use .. google them

You probably also want to boot up in Safe mode and trim your startup list of unwanted programs. You can use msconfig for this on most versions of windows these days. Click Start->Run and type msconfig and click OK Then use the startup tab to uncheck all the unwanted startup items and reboot.

Hi Jmartin

There is no logical reason for the difference, check that the subnet mask is the same under both assignment methods. BF
