I was notified today that four servers containing personal and student loan information were stolen from a Wells Fargo facility earlier this month. Of course, this means information about my own loans has been compromised. While Wells Fargo has assured me that none of the information currently has been detected as being abused, the information has been compromised. The information, according to Wells Fargo, included name, address, social security number and account information.
I am not aware if current loan holders have all been notified as I have been informed. Anyone currently holding a Wells Fargo or Consern loan should take the proper steps to protect themselves. Wells Fargo is currently offering a free membership for their theft protection program to monitor all three credit reporting agencies for suspicious changes to their credit files. I strongly urge loan holders to enroll in this program.
How the company allowed such a physical security breach is beyond me. However, I believe that their simply "accepting responsibility" as they put it is not enough, and I will be looking into the possibility of taking punitive steps against the company.
