Hi
I Connected a crossover cable between my laptop and desktop.
Clicked every connection , tried modifying It's like they can't see eachother.
I run win xp on both
HELP
Does someone have a step by step guide I could use?
What do I do after connecting them?
I do not want to use the internet at all, it's just to share files.
Are my computers configured wrong, does windows detect automatically a connection?
It's my first time and I need someone to guide me .

Perhaps they can't, could you describe how you have each computer's networking properties configured?
....like:
1. Computer Name
2. Workgroup
3. Sharing
4. Protocols
5. etc.

In the network settings, did you enable file and print sharing? Did you disable the firewall? If that does not help, post what you did step by step on each machine, along with any messages you received. There are quite a few networking gurus who should be able to spot the problem.

Did you manage to get your two computers to talk to each other, or are you still having problems?
One issue may be the way that your two computers are getting their IP addresses. They can't get their addresses via DHCP because they don't have access to a DHCP server. Given that you're only connecting two computers, the simplest thing is to give them fixed IP addresses from the authorised private address range. I've got a similar set-up and use 192.168.0.1 for one computer and 192.168.0.2 for the other.
Anyway, if you're still having problems then post another message and I'll try to help.
