Welcome, but I'm quite sure the members and staff will need more info as to what your hardware and software is like. What operating systems are the PCs running. What kind of modem? What service provider, etc?

need more info tarantino77 !!!!

explain how you are connecting the 2 pc's up right now...?? router, hub or twisted-pair, via ethernet cable or what???????

tarantino77
ethernet cable
Alfons
That's not a full explanation of the connection. Are you using a "cross-over" ethernet cable or a regular ethernet cable with a hub or switch - describe the whole LAN and what you're doing with it. Are you using ICS or is there no internet connection?

It's not easy providing support when little of no information is being provided - not all computers are the same and you're the only one that has access to yours to be able to describe it to us.
tarantino77
i'm a newbie and don't know the terminology and set up. smiley- yes.gif ....please help guide me through to explain everything to you...we can do it, don't give up yet.

thank you,

Sorry about the "blast" tarantino77, but we aren't mindreaders or telepathic so we need to rely on posters to give us as much detail as they can - even if it isn't using the latest technical jargon. A good description, in simple English, of how you have things connected, what you're connected to, and stuff like that will be a good start.

For example:
1. if you're connected to the internet with one of the computers, let us know that.
2. if you have the two computers connected to each other and nothing else, let us know that.
3. if you're using Internet Connection Sharing (it's a Windows Utility), let us know.
4. if you have hardware in between the two computers (hub, switch, router), it would also be good to know.

...but give a full description as best you can biggrin.gif

This looks like it might be the ICS host. I'm assuming this because from your post you appear to have two NIC's on the first computer, each with a different IP address. The details that you posted for the second NIC appear to be those associated with your ISP (your internet connection)

This one is connected to nothing - it doesn't look like it's set up properly.

Let's go through some questions (I've already asked most of them) and try to get a picture of exactly how you're connected and to what.
1. Is computer # 1 connected to the internet?
2. If yes to question 1, then describe how you're connected.
3. Describe exactly what's connected to each NIC on computer #1 and where each cable goes from there.
4. Is the connection between the two computers direct or through a hub or switch? If it's direct, are you using a Cross-Over Ethernet cable or a "normal" Ethernet cable?
5. Are you using ICS in the first computer?
6. Did you set up the second computer as an ICS Client?

There are more questions that will need to be answered, but first we need a picture of what you phsically have as a complete network.
tarantino77
computer one is connected to a verizon dsl line.

both nic cable's are connected to a hub.

the computers are not connected directly, but both nic's are connected to a hub.

i'm not sure what a ics client is.

thanks,

Edward

Ok, little by little we're getting the picture of your network. Here are some more questions:
1. In your first post you indicated that you had two computers connected and wanted to know how to connect a third. Does this mean that at some time you had a connection between computer 1 and computer 2?

2. ICS (stands for Internet Connection Sharing), as I mentioned before, is a Windows Utility that allows you to use one computer as the internet access point (gateway or ICS host) and other computers (ICS Clients) are then attached to the host normally through a hub or switch and can independently access the internet as long as the Host is turned on and plugged into your hi-speed modem. Did you install ICS on computer 1 ?

Look at your network configuration data and let us know what you have for the following items on each computer:

1. Computer Name
2. Workgroup Name
3. Are they set for DHCP or fixed IP?

I should have asked a long time ago - what OS does each computer use?
tarantino77
i never had a connection between one and two....the way it is now is the way it always was.

one system uses 98 and the other 2000 professional.

i'm not sure if ics was installed or not ??

where do i find the computer network name?
zap
Start > right click on My computer > left click on proterties > click the computer name tab

Also Start > Run > command > ipconfig /all | more

exit

first system

llm-tgbk computer name
WORKGROUP workgroup name

second system
oleglory computer name
tland workgroup

A hardware question:
1. Do you know for sure that you're using a normal Ethernet cable or a cross-over Ethernet cable? With a hub or switch you MUST use a normal (straight through) cable.

Settings Suggestions:
1. Computer Names must be different.
2. Computer Workgroup Name MUST be the same.
3. Sharing needs to be on.

W2000 Question:
1. What are the protocols installed?

Other Question:
1. What AntiVirus Program are you using on each computer.
tarantino77
what's the difference between normal Ethernet cable or a cross-over Ethernet cable?

what are protocols and how do i find out what protocals are installed ?

anivirus is AVG

Thanks,

Edward
Alfons
The Windows Help Utility is a great place to start learning how things work and where to find information - try that first.

Your favorite search engine will get you the definition of a cross over ethernet cable as well as a straight through version.
tarantino77
don't you know the answers? Just curious why you want me to search for the answers, if i waned to do that I wouldn't be using your forum ?

Thanks,

Edward

Hi tarantino77, the objective here is to help people find answers to their problelms and not necessarily to spoon-feed them information and procedures that they may not understand. I've found that both my employees and clients get a lot more out of solving a problem if they do the basic research themselves, and in addition, they're much easier to work with having become an "informed user".

Give it a try tarantino77, it works and saves a lot of time getting to a final solution biggrin.gif

I disagree. One of my questions was to explain the difference between ethernet cables. I think you could of done that very easily. This is a help Forum. People that come here do not neccessarily and probably more likely do not understand allot of tech terminology. I decided to use prontonic.com instead of your site. They are much more helpful. I recommend when you come across newbies such as myself, be prepared to explain some definitions, then solving the problem, a two-step process. Not, telling them to go look it up, I could of done that on my own anyway.

Thanks,

Edward

Yes it is Edward, it's a Help Forum supported by volunteers that also have a life outside the bounds of these technical boards - we need to earn a living and as such have only limited time to spend with each individual that needs help. This limited time can be put to good use if both sides perform and not just a sole reliance on the technical volunteer.

In my opinion, if you were really interested in fixing your problem you'd have made it as easy as possible for readers here to be able to analyze it and give you sound advise. As it was, details came slowly and reluctantly, so do some homework, learn the basics, get back with details that were asked of you and possibly you might get some answers to your questions.

I think we're very considerate Edward, and you should realize that taunting won't do much to fix your computer problems or your issues.

OK Lets try a simple question: At the hub there should be indicator lights for each port. All the ones connected to computers should have their link lights lit.

If the light is not lit the cable may be wrong or the computer switched off.

Then try running the network setup wizard on the XP machine. Create a disk and run it on the other machines. This will set up a simple TCP/IP network with all the computers on it.

Cross over cables are relatively unusual, though if you buy a LAN kit that only consists of two adapter cards, one cable and no hub then you have a crossover cable.

Almost all cables in general use are straight through. Occasionally you find other variations.
tarantino77
the light is lit...i don't have xp...2000 professional and 98..

Hello tarantino77,

The best advise I can give you is to educate your self on computer Networking and how it operates. Which I did just recently when setting up my wireless network. I now have 4 computers set up on my network, But it has taken time.

My education (which is still on going)included calling friends that knew what they were doing in Networking, my ISP and the Company I purchased my Wireless Router from, many computer help Forums, reading and printing information on tips and tricks and a many google searches for information.

My router web site also had alot of helpful information and tips in helping me understaning what i needed to know. Once I did all of this then I helped myself and helped the ones helping me because they did not have to drag answers out of me or answer question from me that I did not understand to begin with.

Once you understand what is going on and what the Mods and helpers are asking you then you can help them help you they cannot read your or give you solutions if you do not understand.

You may say help me or educate me but first you have to help yourself before anyone else can help you.

A google search on NetWorking and crossover cable is a good start. If you use a Router their web site has alot of good info or they should.

The Admin, mods and other users here are very knowledgeable but they can only help you with what you know and understand.

One other Question: do you use a FireWall on your Network if not then you have to educate yourself on it and networking to understand how they work together and how you can protect your systems. From the wilds of the internet.

Now go educate yourself on the information you need so you can help yourself and help those helping you.

One other thing, if you want to go to another web site for help that is your choice. But please stop Trolling the Forum.
