Sounds like you did not enable file and print sharing in the network connections. Check both pc's.

Unless there's something unique about their routers, you can "string" them together and have workstations attached to either or both access the internet. You may have some problems with local sharing, since the other router isn't local anymore and you will have problems with any downstream router that you may have used as a print server when it was part of the LAN.

To set up this combination you should set up one router at a time, so for this example lets call the router attached to the internet as ROUTER 1 and the one closest to your computer(s) ROUTER 2.

Attach a computer to a LAN port on ROUTER 2 and do not connect anything to the WAN port. Enter the setup utility for this router and change it's address block to something like 192.168.10.XXX - they all have this capability somewhere, you may have to look for it, it may be labeled as setting it's LAN side address as 192.168.XXX.1 which accomplishes the same thing (just change the XXX to 10). Leave DHCP for the LAN Enabled - you may have to restart and go through the RELEASE/RENEW on the computer (you can use the IPCONFIG utility to do this).

Now attach a computer to a LAN port on ROUTER 1 and again don't connect anything to the WAN port - you just want to work with the router setup utility without any other interference. Do any setup that you want here and you can leave the address block as default (usually 192.168.0.XXX except for SMC routers) and leave DHCP enabled for the LAN. Now connect a line from ROUTER 2 WAN port to a ROUTER 1 LAN port and with the setup utility running on ROUTER 2 go through the RELEASE and RENEW process and you should aquire an IP address of something like 192.168.0.3 because the computer that you attached will have 192.168.0.2.

Now you can attach ROUTER 1 WAN port to the internet connection (hispeed modem) and go through the RELEASE/RENEW process there as needed and you should get an IP address for that router from your ISP.

When you're connected from ROUTER 2 to ROUTER 1 to the Internet and want to set up any other features such as the firewall etc, do them on one ROUTER at a time starting with #2 - it's much easier to debug any setup problems by changing one thing at a time and testing the connection before continuing.

If some of this diatribe needs clarification, just post where I lost you & I'll be glad to add detail.

Reinstall the original routers software. Is the new router self sensing? Does it have wan plug or any plugs should work? I had the same problems but most got cured when I reinstalled the software.
